"How are you?"

It's a question we ask, and get asked, almost every single day. It's the obligatory form of communication to the check out chicks, teachers and random people you pass on the street. But, hardly ever, do we give thought to what we actually say. A normal conversation between me and the checkout-chick at my supermarket goes like this:

Checkout Chick: Hi, How are you?
Me: Good, you?
Check Out Chick: Yeah, good.
Moving on…

But, imagine if we answered truthfully, if we bared our souls and told people just how we were feeling today. The daily conversations would change a fair bit. For example:

Check out Chick: Hi, How are you?
Me: Well, I have four assignments due tomorrow and I've only done two of them so I'm stressing out. My parents are getting a divorce and now I have to choose who I get to live with and my best friend's moving to Canada and abandoning me with our geeky friend Brittany forever. I got a huge pimple on the end of my nose and my favourite t-shirt has a big red stain on the front of it so I'm really, really pissed off. You?
Checkout Chick:Well, last night I found out I'm pregnant and as soon as I told my boyfriend he broke up with me and moved back in with his wife and three children. My mum's an alcoholic and she's on the run again, my dad was arrested a week ago and I don't have any bail money because this job pays peanuts and I'm forced to look after my ten year old sister while I study for exams.
Me: Ok, well have a nice day.
Checkout Chick: Yeah, you too.
