Description The dust hung in the air. Stray beams of sunlight creeping in the barracaded windows, shining off the grey particles that drifted around in the abandoned warehouse. I huddled in a corner, hidden behind a few old, wooden crates. Through the concrete walls surrounding me I could hear their screams, calling out for help, but i couldn't move, pure fear had rooted me to the ground.

I stayed there, in the warehouse, for over an hour, too scared to do anything but breathe, when finally, someone found me. The door opened, it's rusty hinges protesting with a loud shriek. A large beam of sunlight cast over the entire building, revealing the crates I was haphazardly hiding behind. I winced as the strong light hit my eyes, turning my head away from the door.

I watched, as a shadow was cast on the floor by someone steping into the doorframe, straining my ears for the sound of a sword being unsheathed, the almost inevitable sound that would come before my death. But, i heard nothing, not a sound. Slowly, the figure walked further into the building, cautious footsteps falling on the concrete floor.
"Katerina?" The voice whispers, "Katerina?!" Instinctively, I turned towards the sound of my name, coming face to face with my brother.
"Dominic!" I say, "What-"
"No time for that," he tells me, grabbing my hand and leading me back towards door, "We must get out of here"
"Dominic!" I say again, just as we reach the exit.
"What?" he says
"Where are they?" I ask. He turns his head." Dom, where's Mum and Dad?" I ask again.
"Oh, Katerina," he whispers, letting go of my hand "I tried, I really did."
"Dom? What do you mean?" I ask. He just turns his head away from me again. "Damn you, Dominic. Tell me! Where are Mum and Dad?!"I yell.
He lets out a long sigh. "They're dead, All right?" he tells me, finally looking me in the eye, "I tried but, they killed them anyway."

I step back away from him, shaking my head"No. No, that can't, no you-you must be wrong," I tell him. "No."
"Katerina. I know, okay? I'm sorry," He says walking towards me , his hand outstretched trying to grab mine." Look, Just come here, everything will be fine, I promise"
" NO!" I shriek, running back to the corner in the warehouse that I was hiding in just minutes before. I sat there, my arms wrapped around my knees as I cried, my shoulders shaking at the weight of my grief for my parents. My eyes crying the tears that I couldn't find before, as I listened to the sound of my gut-wrenching sobs echo throughout the abandoned concrete building.

Slowly, piece by piece I could feel my world shatter into a million tiny fragments, each one contaning a small part of this unbearable sorrow that was coarsing through my body. I knew, even then, that my life had changed in the most drastic of ways.
