Cutie mark and backstory (kind of)- (TL;DR AT BOTTOM)
Pastel was born in Manehattan, with a well off family and a decent relationship with her parents. Her father Slate Clap went to film school, but instead of directing movies he ended up as a director on Bridleway, meeting Pastel’s mother Contour Clarity when she was doing makeup on one of his shows. The two fell in love and Pastel was born, often brought along on set of a production by her mother or father, fueling her deep love for Bridleway. Once Pastel hit school age, she was sent to a private school in Prance. Her time there was cut short, because after about three years attending the school she was pulled out by her mother, only to find out her father had been sent to prison and her family lost a significant amount of money from it. Because Bridleway wanted nothing to do with her mother due to the connection with her father, her mother ended up having to work at a small salon doing makeup there and they had to move into a much smaller apartment. It was rather jarring for her, but she didn’t complain verbally. She was put into a crummy public school, which was fine. But when her previous friends stopped speaking to her after hearing what happened, she broke. She spent nights crying, refusing to let her mother see. When her mother did find out, she was supportive of her daughter, helping her emotionally through this.
Throughout this period in her life, Pastel grew used to not having much money, and instead started making the most of what she did have. She spent her time making sure everything in her small room was organized just so and was always spotless, and she let her mane grow down to the floor keeping it in a ponytail and keeping it clean. The length of her mane made her feel as if she was as beautiful as a princess, and she took pride in this, as her beauty often had well off ponies noticing her. One day in class her friend Rock Kandie accidentally choked on his gum, spitting it out into her mane. Pastel was devastated and ran home early, crying to her mother. She ended up getting a cheap haircut at the salon and it came out absolutely horrible. Pastel was overcome with distress, borrowing Lacey Heart’s crafting scissors to recut her mane. The end result made her look sleek and professional, and although she wasn’t thrilled with how short she had to make it, she wound up getting her cutie mark from this. When she went home, Pastel’s mother was thrilled with how her daughter’s new mane looked.
Nothing eventful happened much after that, other than Pastel being paid by a few mares to do their manes. A few years later, Pastel’s father was released from prison and divorced her mother, leaving the two alone. Pastel was fine with this, as she had grown rather distant with him, but her mother was distraught. Pastel tried cheering her up when her mother shot some cruel words at her, smacking her across the face. Pastel was horrified by this, leaving that night once her mother was in bed. She searched far and wide for a place to live, until she came upon a small salon in the more expensive part of town. She took up a job there, sleeping there each night and opening in the mornings. Years later, Pastel was able to move out into a nice apartment, opening up her own salon. It was small, but she eventually got quite a bit of attention until she was able to open an even better salon, closing her first one and moving into her penthouse apartment where she and her girlfriend now live.
