Around that same time, another doe had just given birth to a fawn and was standing over the newborn, nudging it. Many of the does had already given birth by now, but Bankrose was the last one to give birth. The labor pains had started hours after the sun had set and the doe had snuck away to give birth in the forest as to not disturb the other sleeping deer. Bankrose tilted her head to one side as she stared down at the still fawn before her. The fawn had been born hours ago, yet it had not moved. She lowered her head and sniffed the body. It felt cold and there was no sign of life. The doe’s ears lowered and a stab of pain went through her heart. Her fawn had been a stillborn.

She should have expected this. Ever since she had reached the breeding age, all of her fawns had either been born dead or were born sick and weak before passing on hours later. The only fawn who had managed to survive was her daughter, Skye, but even then she had been very sick and weak as a fawn and everyone in the herd was surprised when she reached a year old. Bankrose was overjoyed by this and was certain that this meant she would be able to produce more healthy fawns.
Unfortunately this was not the case.

Bankrose turned and headed over to a clump of grass to feed, trying to ignore the body of the fawn laying on the ground.
Still she couldn't help but glance over at her dead fawn and felt a wave of grief overcome her.
Perhaps she was destined to never have anymore fawns.
