I want him as a wallpaper. He's gorgeous.

Out of curiosity of fellow artists' processes: How many hours would you say you have in this so far? What program? How many layers, if applicable?

The detail is amazing and inspiring, and incredibly well executed on parts more refined. The first and second toes on that left foot look odd at such an angle, but they look very difficult to position correctly with the foot raised and extended as it is. They must have given you many headaches already!

Definitely looking forward to seeing this completed!

:>

Well thank you.

I made this in Photoshop, like most of my digital art. The total number of layers is 19 currently, although usually I'll merge a set of layers once I'm finished with them to keep the file size down. So the number of layers used altogether would be closer to 30. But I have no clue how much time I've spent on him... I don't often keep track.

So many layers! Are a few of those solely scale and feather texture, or are they devoted to details in parts instead of whole (having all the shading on one layer, for example, instead of shading parts individually)? Do you intend on adding a background as well?

I used seven layers to block out the colors--so all the white patches are one layer, the mane/wings/tail fan are another, etc. All the rest are for texture and shading. I used to not use layers so much but it helps if you mess up to be able to redo one individual aspect of the shading or texturing rather than the whole thing.

But no, I won't be adding a background; this was meant to be a sort of species reference, so it doesn't really need one. The background will just stay gray, the way it is now.

The gray works well. Besides, it won't distract from the 'raptor so much when being used as a wallpaper. <3 xD

Yes, working in categories like that can be helpful. It makes sense, particularly when you're working with details as you are. As practical as it may be, however, if doesn't stop me from being amazed at how many artists use upwards of twenty layers in one piece... I screw up too much to want to use more than two or three at any point, likely because I don't have enough patience to check where I'm working when multiple layers are unlocked...

That aside, I'm still looking forward to it being completed! Good luck! :>
