Description This is a story of a coot family living in a pond close to where I live. Mom was sitting on her nest, while dad was busy bringing food to her. I didn't know there were baby coots. But then I saw to tiny coot heads in the nest. There were four of them.
After a while mom left the nest and I could see about 7 eggs in the nest. Dad had a swim with one of the little ones. After he brought the little coot back to the nest, he left the nest to look for some more food.

It was so lovely to be able to watch them from close by (about 5 meters).

Ze zijn inderdaad lief en aandoenlijk met hun punk kapseltjes!
Heel typisch dat ze zo ter wereld komen (de waterhoentjes net zo)!
Misschien moet dat vijanden afschrikken!

Lentekriebel In reply to webworm [2010-05-13 15:27:44 +0000 UTC]

They are ugly and adorable at the same time!
I love them, and didn't expect them at that place.

And I was really surprised, so I went home for my camera.
Hopefully the sun will be back soon, so that I can go
back to them to take more pictures. These pictures are
a bit dark but I think these coots are so adorable that
I uploaded this coot story anyway!

Thanks for commenting! I appreciate your support a lot!

Lovely shots , and what a neat story to go with your sequence. Thanks for sharing them! I assume these birds are common in your area?

I'm glad you appreciate the story about the coots.
Yes, coots are common in our area.
We've also got moorhens, they look like coots,
but they have red on their nozzle instead of white (coots).
They have very special feet too. Not like ducks.

I don't think we have that kind of bird here in the Eastern United States, but we do have many Canadian Snow Geese, like this one [link] and this one with his or her parents [link] We also have Mallard ducks, but not as many, at least around my neighborhood.

The longer you stay there the more they trusted me! They let me come quite close. And the male came out of the water to see what I was doing. I talked to him (about 1 meter distance) and he looked at me as if he understood that I was telling him not to be afraid, that I was just looking and taking pictures. After a while he left for the pond!
In the past I did that with gees too and it worked well!

I experienced it more often when I'm talking to animals.
Maybe they like the attention or feel that I won't do them any harm.
Don't know whether it would work with lions as well

They sure are, those big cats!
Yesterday there was a program on television about 2 men
who looked after a lion when he was young.
After some time they gave him back to nature again.
One year later they went back to the place where they had
left the lion behind. He was still there, and he recognized
hem. Jumped at them, holding their shoulders for a big hug! He was so
happy to see them again! And a second time they came
back to see him, he was grown up, didn't hug them anymore, but
was very happy to see them again. And he did even show them
his 'wife'. It was so wonderful to see!!

Aww i guess theres no breaking that bond, its like having a child almost One day i want to hug a big cat like that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

webworm In reply to lostknightkg [2010-05-13 13:56:36 +0000 UTC]

I think you can have that bond with humans and animals als long as you give
each other enough attention and love!
Once I hugged a black panter..... but it was a baby panter!! It had the size of
a huge house cat. Will never forget that!
Hugging a big cat: you'll have to invest in it!!!

What are you studying? What kind of job will you get in the future?
