This is the final art for the Katana trading card in the DC Women of Legend trading card set. This was my second for-print card based on a comic book character.
Since I knew this was going to be shrunk down and printed at a wee 2.5 x 3.5 inches, I went for a simple composition with lines converging towards the face of our heroine, and a strong delineation between fore- and background. As my Batwoman card for the set went with a red-green color scheme, I consciously avoided that, instead using a lot of cool and blue hues to emphasise not only the reds but to pop out the hues on her face. Combined with the composition, your eye really does dart right up there.
My primary art direction from DC was to have her in Tokyo, so those are indeed buildings from the Tokyo skyline. Trivia: the neon sign to the left says “GOJIRA” and to the right, though mostly cropped away, is “ULTRAMAN”.
