really? that's fascinating O.O

British slang is a long a slow learning process for me. Granted I'm not actually researching that hard >.>

xD well I'm still getting used to American slang. Actually I'm slightly worried by how few Americans are able to deduce that taking the piss means mocking, I would have thought it obvious.

I love British slang, I was brought up on Public Television! But I have to say that "taking the piss" is grammatically flawed; surely those being mocked are taking the piss, whilst the mockers are giving it?

...also, the British must admit that they pronounce "schedule" incorrectly! HARD CH sound!!!

Well it's a dialect thing. lol Different places have always done it differently. Canadians share a lot of British pronunciation such as Zed for Z whereas I hear Americans pronounce it Zee?
Yeah it's kinda silly that we say it that way but we know what it means. xD
Though that's a valid point.

That's because I sort of made it up!

Actually, a Zoog is a strange, furry tree-dwelling creature that dwells in The Dreamlands...read H.P. Lovecraft's "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" for more details!

Chaosfive-55 In reply to Celestial-Pudding [2013-01-18 16:22:18 +0000 UTC]

True! But I was saying that when any of us read poetry, even to ourselves, it's best to read it out loud.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Celestial-Pudding In reply to Chaosfive-55 [2013-01-18 16:26:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's true. It's not just the words but the sounds of the words. Though we may be able to get the idea of it in our heads the sounds create as much imagery as the words.

Exactly! The best poems cast spells, they bring whole worlds to life, sublime visions...Poe, Tennyson, Dante, Milton, Shakespeare...

Yep, but English doesn't work well with Dactylic Hexameter, but we actually speak iambic naturally so that works well for English. That's why I think Shakespeare is so popular and good.
Theatre - - it actually annoys me that we have to learn Shakespeare in English, it wasn't meant to be read it was meant to be played, spoken and acted before an audience. I enjoy Shakespeare but reading it is no good.

I agree--which is why teachers should get their students to act out scenes from the plays! I remember in high school, one of my English teachers called several students to the front of the class to read/act out the assassination scene from Julius Caesar--he played Caesar! I can still see the student who did Casca: "Speak, hands, for me!" and thumping the teacher on the back with his fist!

That's awesome. My first English teacher at my school let us act the murder scene in MacBeth. My group put a comedy spin on it which was more popular than you'd expect but it wasn't as good as it ordinarily would be. Fun though.

When I had a boring teacher for Science my grade started to drop but once I got a different teacher the next term I was much happier and my grades are back up to a B/A n.n Not quite a full A because I'm not quite that smart. n.n;;
So that proves it, teachers have to be fun otherwise the pupil doesn't focus. (lol accidental pun)

I am fairly certain I would be one of those Americans had I not played Saints Row 3. It just gave the perfect context when the character uses it. hehe

Slang is strange, its often full or history and culture that really brings life to a place. *takes nerd glasses off* o.o

Anyway, my culture education continues. take care
