I adore that shot! I love that it's mostly of the rocks, and it's got the small tease of water.

God is in the detail and You have captured God on celluloid perfectly.
the rocks seems to be from some distant planet and the water looks like the surface, reminds me of the movie Red Planet. Very very detailed work from you.

Depth was a most appropriate title. It feels as if you could reach out and touch the rocks.

That's Lake Tahoe, isn't it? Those rocks are *so* fun to climb on and explore, and they look like giant pebbles.
I disagree with *nyssi . Where I live, half the year the sky is eternally dark grey with clouds. In late spring when the sky starts being blue sometimes, it seriously looks wierd. Anyway, when clouds are out they have a limiting effect on the sky, because you can only see a few thousand feet up. If they were present in this picture, they would only give a cramped feeling. The picture's name is "Depth". The giant pebble-boulders are right there, and they contrast with looking way out across the water to see the distant shadow-mountains, which blend into the sky, which leads off into infinity.. the depth is the emphasis of distance and space. So, no clouds.

I agree with your thoughts. I think you captured the texture of the rocks beautifully and the tone of the image really gives it a nice distinctiveness from the millions of other nature photos. Nice work.

Beautiful, emphasized textures. From the thumbnail the water looked like it was a stretch of desert sand, which made the sight of water made it even more surprising. The contrast and tonality is gorgeous as well.

I quite agree when you say that monochrome is better to work with creatively. It's a lot easier to work with, if you're adjusting the curves or even just the brightness and contrast. With colour photography, theres always the risk of blowing out the colours, which can ruin a piece easily.
Anyway, to the shot itself. The monochrome with the slight colour toning looks fantastic. You've done quite an impressive job in bringing out the tones and textures of every single aspect of the shot, particularly the rocks and the water. About the water, I actually first through it was sand, then I thought to myself "No, it looks like water, can't be sand" but it's amazing how it made me first thing of sand. I think because you've captured it at a precise moment which has frozen in it. It actually gives me weird feelings looking at it, especially around the bottom area where it's lapping up near the rocks.
While I quite like the shot, I'm not sure I like the composition so much. It seems confined and cramped. I think if there were a bit more space between the rocks and the right edge, the cramped feeling would be realised. I think personally, a landscape shot would have worked a little better than portrait. This is just my opinion, though.
The lighting is fantastic. I love the direction of light coming from the right, just shining on the rocks. Add's a nice highlight to the image but it doesn't overpower the rest of it. It casts some interesting shadows. You know what would have made this shot? Clouds in the sky. But you can't predict these things.
