Description This image, I suppose, could be called a labor of love.

Ok: 9 shots with a 50mm lens on Pentax *istD at f/22 using an infrared filter. Shooting infrared is tricky as it is, but trying to shoot an infrared pano can almost drive you insane. First you need bright lighting conditions to get good IR reflection of the foliage. And, you need to go at a time of day when the sun will not peek into the far edge of your pano when shooting the pictures so as not to get ugly flare, and to maximize the IR light the sensor picks up. And, you need to get a day when the wind is at a minimum...because when shooting at f/22 with an IR filter you will obviously be on a tripod taking long exposures, and if there's wind it blurs the leaves quite a bit. I went back to this spot four separate times over the course of a month to try and get this right.

After that, numerous hours of post production, correcting the stitching, straightening the horizon, adjusting the perspective, balancing the colors and contrasts... When shooting digital infrared, the color generated by the camera is actually a "false color" since the CCD sensor has to assign some sort of visible color to the IR data it's seeing. It can produce some interesting results, especially when tweaked. What I actually did was process the image twice, doing two separate color mixings: one as it came out of the camera with standard level adjustments, and then another where I switched color channels to change the color of the sky and some more subtle tones in the foreground. Then I layered the parts of the two images over each other. And considering each image had a file size of several hundred megabytes in 16 bit color mode, you can guess that it was grueling on my system.... If nothing else it's reconfirmed my desire for one of those new 64 bit Athlon processors....

I know weird infrared "colors" don't appeal to everyone's taste, so sorry to those who don't like it Plus, sorry for the big file size...I wanted to make it even bigger because you loose so much of the detail (the physical print size is 12 by 29-1/2 inches!), but I guess computer screens just aren't set up to display panos. Anyways, perhaps too much rambling here but it's a relief to be able to do so after finally finishing it. If you made it through this far, thanks

That is a really impressive digital IR shot,
I really like the detail of it aswell as the coloring,
I read your description, my hat's off to you for all of your hard work with this,
I have just recently begun to dabble in digital IR with my camera and a home made IR filter made out of two pieces of exposed slide film, it's not perfect but it works,
I'm still learning though, still a ways away from doing anything this good.

i haven't figured out why you didn't use a wider lens
unless you wanted to have a larger resolution image for large printing
i like your shot though
i downloaded it to see it all at once
WELL STITCHED

i've been thinking about getting one of those r72 filters

i often read that using too slow an aperture causes dispersion
i don't see that here
but i don't really know what i'm looking for

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

welder In reply to facehead [2005-03-09 06:50:32 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the resolution is necessary for print. The print size is somewhere around 10x28...a single image shot with a wide angle lens on a digital camera wouldn't get enough resolution to come close to that. And it'd probably take a panoramic format camera to capture the whole field of view anyway. The small aperture is necessary to maximize depth of field.

Thanks.

Even tho I've already commented on this image before it deserves another one ! I'm so glad you made this a print....I've got a
tiny bit of extra money this month I still am amazed at the colors of the trees ..... and the fact that this image looks like
an amazing oil painting ( without any brush strokes, LOL ). Thank you, Art for taking the time to let me know all of the
work that went into this creation. Like a lot of non-photographers I had NO idea ! Amazing, simply amazing !

create. By-the-way, how's the business of selling your images
going ? Have a wonderful day !

That's just some outstanding IR work.
I love IR photography and now have the oportunity to practice it since i got my filter this christmas.
But this pano is really impressive.
You must have had a hell of a work here. But it's quite regarding when anything ends great.
+fav for this extraordinary photography work. If i gather the money, i'll surely buy a print of this.

For me the center of focus is that large tree amongst the other trees, right in the middle of the panorama. It is a stunning tree! I love how you've flattened the tones on its trunk and branches giving it a painted feel. And the cotton candy foliage on everything is fantastic!
