Very interesting concept, one I'd normally say would work better in black and white for impact, but the colour makes it feel more alive, more immediate. The rust stands out, and intrigues me as to it's purpose; it's the only shell like that, but it's the only loaded one too. Perhaps it's just coincedence, or circumstance, but it gives the picture duality; while it has the power advantage, it still has flaws and imperfections, and no control is ever absolute.

The picture is, as ever, perfect in all respects, if a little bright, especially considering the subject matter

someone always has to see some sort of phallus dominated or patriarchal symbolism in a shot like this. again i just thinks its tough as nails representation of a shot i always imagined myself doing.

not just freud i think..............

I see that uselessness of war in it, that useless sending young people in areas, not knowing what the have to to with that countray, why they have to kill peolple and what the hell this is for...

I hate that politics of war......surely...

and i love your peace..

George Carlin would have a few choice words to back up Freud - I'm sure of that

When I looked at this shot for the first time the first thing that came to mind was : "what a waste" - the pile of shells lying in the background, occupying space - and for what? It's amazing what we build up and tear down - the sense of fear that hides behind the construction of an arsenal like this. What amazes me more is that after all of these years the vast majority of the world's leaders still haven't figured everything out - that it still comes down to this.

I like how you've set up the shot - the lone shell really sets the mood and helps back up the title that you've chosen (and vice versa). The backdrop of shells pulls everything together and sends the message home. I'm being really really picky when I say this, but I'd like to see this shot taken from a lower angle - to emphasize the number of shells, and perhaps even the size of the shell in the foreground. Other than that I love this - it's prefcet. I've seen a lot of photos on the site today that have a message behind them which is great - it's a nice refreshment from the usual concept / space age architecture photos that have taken over as of recent

Love the symbolism and humor in this, Arthur!

Great capture of texture and light...especially the shadow-play. It is a nice metaphorical statement, one where words aren't necessary, the photo conveys all the emotion.

But after smiling at your brilliant idea, it becomes quite scary.. I mean, how the world is beeing hanfled, and by whom and WHY.

Haha I know what Freud would say about this one.... Maybe hes right, maybe wars and the tools used to wage wars is part of the boy's club. This is a wonderfull shot, nice composition, i like the balance of the background and how the pile behind helps transition maintain that nice even balance, also helps keep focus on the single large standing bullet. I like the colors, the sky realy has a nice touch to it, and aged look of the bullets have makes it more authethinc, doesnt seem like it was produced in a studio for this sole purpouse, it seems like this sign has been here for a while and you happened to discover it and capture it with your camera, almost saying look this has been under our noses the entire time but no one stoped to notice it. On a side note not that there is anything wrong with this shot, but i think it would be interesting to see another shot with a pool of blood spilling towards the lone standing bullet, but that would probably require a white background that wont absorb the liquid, dont mind me deranged visions . Anyway I like this shot, it can be mean many things and rests on the person's perception, just like how Freud would relate this to a phalic symbol....

Thank you A lot of people seemed to simply take it as a "war is bad" statement. But you've identified more of the more subtle feeling I had myself with this shot, which is the false sense of security you mention.
