Description The window of our perception, from near - the christian church - to far: the japanese pagodah, the moon, planets and all the stars of the milky way. Hidden behind the veil is the end of your cognizance.
Let's not talk about the time I spent on this work. The milkyway is a faithful rendition of all visible stars of the night sky, spectral classes included. Stars above magnitude 2 got a sequin. The planet's color was approximated by fabric prints available to me, as are the red and blue-green roofs of a German and a Japanese city. A detail of this work, the Milkyway in Pearls, can be seen here: fav.me/d3g7ul7

Materials used: Cotton prints and batic fabric, embroidery floss by DMC and MEZ, seed pearls, silk chiffon, cotton thread and thread wax. No machine ever touched that quilt; all is hand-sewn and hand-embroidered.

Dimensions: 90cm x 80cm

I found a secret star cult, declare you to be our high priest and this is our holy artefact filled with the purity of our deity.
So we must always keep it secret. Keep it safe.

LOL. But if nobody may gaze upon the glory of the gods, how shall anyone partake of it?

An amazing art quilt. I must ask - do you dislike sewing machines? I use one in my applique and it makes sewing time so much quicker.

When I started this project, I did not posess a sewing machine able to sew fine fabrics. So I decided not to make allowances for machines and used hand-embroidery techniques for all applications and the pearl embroidery. And as I finished, using a sewing machine for the quilting would have distracted from the overall hand-made look.
Also, fabric behaves totally different when sewn by hand or by machine. Work with a single needle always looks softer.

That is very true ... I didn't think about that. I sometimes use stretch fabrics and velvets in my applique which are often unpredictable.

Star Quilt is a beauty any way it was created!

Using stretchy fabrics, I usually take a textile glue for the first "arrangement", then I fix the applique with some interim stitching and then I go over the edges with hand stitching from the outside in. Usually you work from the inside out, but when using stretchy stuff, the fabric doesn't pull flat but gets out of shape.
I never even tried to seam stretchy appliques with the sewing machine.

Velvets are good when you put in a layer of nettle fabric in between. It gets a bit more stable and doesn't slip as much.

Never heard of nettle fabric ... sounds interesting.
I don't use many stretch fabrics ... it's cotton usually, but there are the odd bits for art quilts I might use. I use an iron adhesive which kind of makes it behave (kind of. LOL)

Some also call Nettle Cheese-Linnen: A very thin and stable fabric that you glue or sew under the stretchy fabric so it stays manageable during quilting or embroidering. It works better than just heat-glueing the stretchy stuff directly on the basic fabric.

I love the way it looks! I think making it look like a window was clever, and all hand sewn?! Wow!
