Jessica was having a bad morning from the moment her eyes opened. She had a headache, and her thighs were sore from all the riding. She was exhausted. She had never done so much training in her life, and with the Belmont  in just a weeks' time, she had a lot of work to do. She ate quickly, and didn't bother with makeup. She threw her hair in a ponytail and got in her car to leave her hotel, arriving at the track five minutes late. Christopher was already there, saddling up WPEC King of the Pirates , and he scolded her gently for her lateness with a smile- he knew she was tired.
Jessica mounted the horse who danced lightly on his hooves, his powerful body quivering with energy. He tossed his head and Jessica frowned.
It was warm already, a change from the rainy days they had been having. The track had dried out and the sun was peeking over the trees.
Luffy started the paw at the ground, even before Jessica began to walk him. It was a habit he had occasionally, but didn't normally, especially when he was in work. He tended to do that after he had been in the pasture for a while.
"He's in a bit of a mood, be gentle on him for starts" Cohan said, "probably a good opportunity to work on his pace. Hold him back and keep his head in check, don't let him lunge ahead too much. Aim for a quick canter after you've warmed him up."
Jessica warmed the colt up for a while. She corrected him for losing focus quite a few times, and had to hold on to his mane as he decided to lunge forward.
She began the harder training, bringing him into a canter and watching his pace. She had to sit hard in the saddle, the colt's breath fast and shallow. She watched carefully with concern. His gait was fine, and he wasn't lame at all. Probably still a bit out of focus from the travel and the different diet. She kept working, struggling to keep him in check.
Suddenly, Luffy broke into a gallop. She sat hard and pulled him back, but he just brought his head to his chest to stop her pulling harder and ran even faster. Jessica cursed and gripped his mane for support, sitting hard in her saddle and trying to calm him.
They came around the turn on the track and the trees rustled. Luffy shied.
He had never shied before- ever.
He leapt to one side with a scream, his rhythm breaking and his legs moving in an unnatural gait. The colt's legs danced like an octopus moving over the seabed, and Jessica felt one hit the wrong spot. Instinctively ducking her head in, she felt the ground approaching.
Bang.
Crack.
Jessica felt the ground hit her left side before she began to roll. She felt a massive weight over her back, but it let up instantly. Then, something hard hit her helmet with force.
She opened her eyes and watched, dazed, as the black and red stars faded from her vision. She was on her side, and she didn't want to move. Everything hurt, especially her neck and her arm.
She looked over, stubbornly turning her head through the pain. The spritely colt stood up and she felt a sigh of relief as she saw him shake his head and his neck, before walking towards her on the ground. He wasn't limping.
Jessica began to cry with a mix of pain, shock and relief for her horse.
Christopher reached her side first, already on the phone. She didn't know who to- although she could hear she couldn't quite process what people were saying. Her head was throbbing and she put her right hand on the ground to brace herself so she wouldn't fall off the spinning world.
She lay on the ground, blinking and crying as Christopher ran his hands down her arm. Another few boys who had been training had handed their horses to the stablehands and were looking over the colt who that had managed to catch, feeling his legs.
It was only five or ten minutes before Jessica was blinded by red and blue lights. She noticed how different the ambulance sounded in America. Cold hands braced her neck and began to take her blood pressure on her right arm.
So many questions. Do you have any allergies? How's your pain? Can you tell me your name? Can you tell me where you are? To her, they all seemed so pointless, and made her angry. She wanted to go and check on Luffy- she was sure she was fine, and she needed to make sure he'd be okay for the race!

Christopher watched as the ambulance drove away, worried.
But, he couldn't do anything for Jessica now- she was in the best hands possible, and her boyfriend was already on the way to the hospital to see her. He turned his attention to the colt. He looked okay, but was worried as the vet looked him over and ran his hands down his long fetlocks. He stopped a few times, and Christopher's heart jumped a few times.
"He looks fine to me at the moment," said the onsite vet. Though Chris was relieved, he knew something had to be going on. This was not normal for this colt, and something had to be seriously wrong. Something wasn't right...

To be continued
