From The Chronicles of Gadooa, here's an entry that shall explain what magic is, where it comes from and how to wield it.

Long ago, before magic even existed, certain Animals wanted to know how it felt like to wield eternal-like powers, similar to that of the Great One. The Great One was at first displeased with this, but eventually forgave those particular mortals.
The Great One then decided, just to humor them, make something mystical for the mortals to possess and make them feel powerful, but not enough to oppose the Great One at all. The Great One, with the help of Scout Angels, constructed a pocket dimension within Heaven called the Ethereal Plane. This pocket dimension was designed by the majority of Heaven to create and emanate the energies that are known today as magic (or sometimes known as arcane powers or arcane energies).
Once the magic was first leaked into the mortal physical universe, it was invisible (and still is today). Certain individuals from different species (not all species, however, can do magical spells) found ways to harness and control samples of these mysterious new energies, gifted to them by the Great One.
Those who wield magic are known as wizards, sometimes called mages, magi and magicians. If one uses their magic for evil purposes, they are known as a sorcerer/sorceress. If a sorcerer/sorceress goes too far in doing evil deeds with magic, the main extreme evil deed being at one with the forces of Hell, then they are known as warlocks/witches.
In the lush swamps of Qwazwapla, on the continent of Imerialia, there is a great sanctum on a medium-sized mountain there in which different Animal wizards from around much of Gadooa come to have international meetings about anything good, bad or just strange in any magical activity. Here at the Xalqualma Sanctum, there are classes with instructors teaching many young Animals the ways of magic and how to use it properly. The Xalqualma Council is the head of the sanctum and they are always the ones who often observe the young students and study if they are fit to be true magic-wielders or not, seeing if magic is at balance with them.
Ever since the first spark of magic's creation, the Evil One saw this as potential and created a new form of demon to use it in combat against angels as well as perform new sin tricks upon mortals. However, the Great One created a new form of angel to fight against this particular demon.
