Description This is a piece I did just for fun. I noticed I have no predominantly red pieces in my portfolio, I haven't painted a female character in awhile, and I almost never do pieces just about villains. so that's what this is.

And as usual I set out designing a character purely from my head and it ends up being an existing character. shortly after i finished the line drawing for this I googled "raven queen" and found out she is an official D&D character. So even though I meant this to be an original piece it might as well be a D&D piece which I'm ok with.

If yours was a play on king in the north, that would explain it.

A semi-benevolent death god, and one of the more enigmatic power players in the D&D pantheon. I won't get into debates of religion but as a character, she always seems to be interesting, DMs have a lot of room to work with, and by extension they really characterize her strongly. By that vein, she's something of a common crowd favorite.

Lore things aside, the art is impeccable. The coloration is beautiful and I like the subtle gradients you've used. Deep, rich colors contrasting with more light tones. This is a beautiful piece.

I'm particularly fond of the way her hands look like talons without being... hrm. Cartoonish about it? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I don't think it would fit this piece as well.

Amazing.
How do You manage to make Your pieces so clean?
There is no mud there, no loose strokes, everything is not only perfectly clean and readable, but also balanced and harmonized.
I'd love to see You at work.

The Raven Queen is actually the god of death in D&D... But since she became so after defeating the older god of death Nerull when she was still a mortal adventurer, your piece could be a very good depiction of her in her (widely unknown) previous life as a mortal..!

Very inspiring piece. I love your use of colours, the character and the scenery itself.

I'm putting together a portfolio myself, and your idea with the colour schemes is an interesting one. Want to show a little difference and that it's not all blood red for example. Any other tips other than varying your pieces too?

WesTalbott In reply to Malinidk [2012-01-17 17:20:04 +0000 UTC]

Here's what I keep in mind when arranging my portfolio.

1. Quality control.

If you only have 5 good pieces to show, don't throw in 3 old pieces that aren't at that same level in order to make it seem like you have more work than you do.

2. Variety of subject matter.

Don't have too much of the same thing. However if you are best at landscapes and are showing your work in hopes of getting work painting landscapes, don't show character work. Show variety in textures, locations, time of day etc... Same goes for a character artist. Show you can do both male and female, different ages etc... This is also where color comes in. If every thing you do has a greenish color scheme you may want to considering taking a few of those out and replacing them with blue and red etc...

Lastly I would recommend pinpointing exactly what it is you enjoy most and focus on filling out that portfolio and then if you enjoy other things as well form separate portfolios for those. For example I have a Concept Art portfolio, and an Illustration Portfolio. Some pieces work for both but the portfolio as a whole will lean on one direction or the other.

Hey man, I've been having some issues and also due to being bumped by comments and replies - which is why I'm replying by now.

First of all thanks for your insight. Secondly thanks even more for your tips and tricks when it comes to arranging a portfolio. I can really relate to what you would keep in mind. It makes good sense. I'm really grateful for the time you took to put this together. Cheers.
