Excellent idea! I don't think the butterflies take away from the render at all, in fact I think they kind of lead your eye around the whole piece. Nice work!

Holy crap that render is sexy. The only gripe I have is that the bright color of the butterflies draws your attention from the focal point, assuming it's somewhere in the center. Wonderful work though.
