Description It's amazing to think that in only one issue, they managed to take Ted Kord (Blue Beetle II, not pictured) and make him one of the coolest superheroes in the DCU, then give him one to the head on the last page. I actually went out and tracked down three volumes of his Justice League adventures shortly after he was murdered in the pages of Countdown to Infinite Crisis, DC's event du jour. Ah well.

This guy is Jaime Reyes, an ordinary teenager from Texas who just happened upon a magic blue scarab. The scarab belonged to Ted Kord and his Golden Age forerunner, and it was last seen tearing the Spectre a new one all by itself. Batman used this new Beetle to locate and destroy a renegade satellite of his own making, which had been relentlessly hunting and killing super people and innocent civilians with impunity since last summer.

For those of you who haven't been keeping up with these events (and I can't blame you, it is a large and complicated story to follow), that means the scarab is very powerful and extremely important to the DC universe.

Personally, I like the look of his costume, and I like the writer/artist team assigned to his new series. I'll miss Ted Kord, but I'm willing to see what the new kid can do.

This new beetle is awesome, love the new artwork and the writing is great. But yeah, creepy fingers, man, creepy fingers.

Yeah, he is. I haven't been able to keep up with him as closely as I would like, but what I've seen so far is awesome.

Yeah, and he only did it because he liked watching the pretty lights. It's like watching Frankenstein drowning the little girl to watch her float. Horrifying.

Yeah, I knew those guys were a team before, but only because I saw it in the back of an old Blue Devil comic. It's nice to see DC breathing new life into some of their older characters.

They already have. He's one of the main characters of 52. Every DC title jumped ahead after the end of Infinite Crisis, and 52 covers all the things that happened in that period one week at a time, hence the name 52. The stars are Steel (of Superman), Black Adam, Renee Montoya (a Gotham detective) and the Question, Ralph Dibny the Elongated Man (still mourning his wife, but trying to pick up the pieces), and Booster Gold. Booster is being a superhero sell-out by using his knowledge of the future to stop crimes and disasters before they happen. Turns out he's fucking up time and space in the process, though. Same old Booster.

I'm also giving the new Blue Beetle a chance, and so far they have yet to disappoint me. I think the new direction(writer and artist) is always good if it sparks interest in the character and his predecessor. This is an absolute great rendering of the new Blue Beetle! You've really got the look of the costume, right down to the special effects! Very nicely colored as well! Truly excellent work!

I hope Countdown is worth something someday as my copy was signed by Jim Lee. I like the new design for the Beetle and I like the detail you managed to get into the costume cause the new costume is hard to draw...I just dunno if I'm gonna bother going back and reading the new series.

Now Puppets! those are scary! if he had finger puppets on, it would be terrifying!

Finger puppets of what? Like the old Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Fire, Mary Marvel, Guy Gardener, the Elongated Man and Maxwell Lords (essentially an entire era of JLI)? I guess that would work.

Which issue? Prelude to Infinite Crisis where Kord gets his gourd popped, or the first issue of Blue Beetle?

Don't know how the Crisis actually ends yet. I've gotten as far as the 6th issue and it's not over yet. I'd just as soon keep you in suspense a while longer.

Knowing Giffen, the writer of Blue Beetle and "I Can't Believe It's Not the Justic League," something like this would make the cover ^_^1

I gotta give it up to DC to have balls enough to kill off such a cool character. That issue is pobably gonna be worth something someday. Maybe.
Nice job, Gaff. Creepy and cool at the same time.

Thanks. Ted Kord ruled, but lately, he wasn't really that popular until after DC made the decision to kill him. They spent the whole issue showing us that he was, indeed, a very cool character, and they did him real justice I think.

HE'S NOT TED! D:

But damnit they found my weak spot in scrawny hispanic men. And the flat fingertips are cool.

And I really dig Cully Hamner's art.

Great job on this! (Have you seen Lee's IC#7 cover!? homg Green Lantern dog pile)
