Okay, so this one deserves a little bit of an explanation.Recently Laylinqq and Patch-of-Heaven came up with a thought: "Where is Twilight's brother, Shining Armor, is in the Ink Potts Monte Cristo AU?"
Since Fernand had no siblings in the novel they decided to create one for him, thus giving Shining Armor a role in this alternative universe crossover. This is Septime Monsparkle, Fernand Monsparkle's big brother, a character Laylinqq and Patch-of-Heaven came up with. When I discovered this idea and saw his design I thought to myself: "The idea of making an uncle for Albert is actually pretty original, nice and cute!", so I decided to draw a little fanart of Septime with his lilttle brother and his even smaller nephew.
Additionally, I decided to try a different style of shading, more simplified and colorful. I think it came out pretty decent.
Also, NOPE, "MONTE CRISTO IS ALBERT'S DAD" FANS, Fernand does not look pissed because he hates Albert or something, but because he doesn't like when his big brother compares him to little children by saying that Fernand has the same adorable baby face when he's angry!
Also also, this is neither a commission nor request. I decided to draw a fanart or someone else's design. It's perfectly normal. I whole heartedly support original ideas from Ink Potts fans and support new ideas for characters and designs for this AU.

I'm confused. Wasn't Dantes in jail for, like, five years then Albert was born and then six years later Dantes got out? How could he be Albert's dad? Have any of those people actually read the book?

"Would you stop that?"the alicorn snapped ,rolling his eyes"You will ruin him with this ...this affection"said he ,narrowing his eyes at his brother who promptly ignored him.
"You are just jealous Fernandie"he stated while still cooing at the small pegasus,who adorably stuck his tongue out .Septime beamed with joy and watched him fondly while Fernand looked away ,very annoyed.

Uncle and nephew are too cute here, can I hold in my arms that little fur-ball of love too or would papà-Fernand be angry? It’s better for my safety if I don’t mess with him XD God, his grumpy face is so adorable.
To be honest, I always imagine that someone would come up to make Shining Armour in this cross-over as Fernand’s brother, it was only a matter of time ; ) If it was for me, I would simply introduce him as a general who was above Fernand when the latter was still a mere soldier, and maybe with time the older white unicorn would become a sort of father figure for him (since Fernand’s real father already died at the beginning of the novel, we don’t know how many years before, but probably when his son was still very young). But it doesn’t mean this idea is bad! We only have different opinions XD
I only said that because I’m thinking what changes this choice could bring, like:
[spoiler] Even if he is somewhere else for most of the time during the story, we will know sooner or after about his brother’s suicide and probably will be very disappointed towards Mercédès and Albèrt for leaving Fernand without trying to fix something in a good way or at least try to talk with him and ask him why he did what he did, and not simply run away without a word in order to avoid the problem (it’s literally what they did, not the smartest option for mine), because actually a good talk can avoid a lot of bad things. I’m already imagine a bitter discussion (before Albèrt leave Marseilles for the army) between all three, because I doubt Shiny/Septime will liquidate it like “eeeeh, the fate decided, that’s how life works buddy”, simply accept it and stay quite in front of the loss of his little brother. So, would he challenge Monte-Cristo on mortal duel? He can kill the Count with no problem, no matter how much Edmond is good with a sword, magic will always be a vantage over someone who can’t use it, especially if we’re talking about a skilled unicorn as Shiny is.
Or maybe the fact Mond- pardon, Monsparkle, has a sibling to his side can change his fate a bit and prevent at least his tragic death? Like, Septime and Cadence could arrive in time and take him with them far away where they live before Fernand could do that extreme act. And maybe they would try to help him reconcile with his wife and son, because Cadence knows Fernand’s love for Shy is real and that his wish to make her happy is genuine (since for the entire novel he swears to her undying love, keeping that promise until his last breath).
Sorry Edmond/Mercédès fans, but it’s pretty clear that in the book she loved both of her men (stallions in this case) and in deep of her heart she regrets to have left her husband behind, she said it herself.
Am I over-analyzing as usual? Yes, of course! To be honest, these events can be interesting for a sort of What if? or alternative time-line separated from the canon story.

Hope Laylinqq and Patch-of-Heaven won't hate me or get offended in some way, I don’t want to mocking you or say your idea sucks or degrade it!
That’s only my opinion and I don't want to force others to think in the same way I do, if you two want to keep on with this, it’s more than ok ^^
Anyway, the drawing is very beautiful and colorful, I just love how you make the shades and Septime design is pretty cool too!
Ps. I wonder one thing, why is there a scratch on one of the stars of Fernand’s cutie mark? Since he is a soldier, a war scar maybe?

Psss. Also, I think it would be cute to see Cadence and Shycédès as sisters-in-law! Cadenza, as the alicorn of Love, could have the right sensibility to help Shy in the first times to deal better with her sadness about Edmond’s loss in order to be more serene with her husband and son after.
Pssss. In writing this I realize how much I love the idea of an AU where actually Fernand didn't die and Mercé gives him a second chance to do things right and live a life, together, finally free of lies and secrets, helping each other to heal the wounds of their broken hearts

Having his big brother as a general is really a nice idea and would give quite a reason for Fernand to start wishing to become a general himself, or even become someone even higher than his older brother. But, I'm not the right person to argue with those who created him about Septime's placement in this world, so we'll just have to stick with what Laylinqq and Patch-of-Heaven will come up with
As for Fernand's death, it is a nice thought to know what would've happened if Fernand lived, but I don't think it would keep the story and the moral it delivers the same. Fernand's death was necessary for Monte Cristo to realize his mistake through Albert and Mercedes. If they would stay with Fernand and protect him, which does seem like a thing they shoudl've done, Monte Cristo wouldn't see the impact of his doings and would've just thought that he's still doing the right thing even when Vileffort has gone insane. If Fernand would've lived, probably Villefort and Danglars would've died instead, it's like a butterfly effect thingy. Furthermore, I think if Septime was a real character in the story - I don't think he'd discover that Fernand died right away, since I assume he was pretty far away from France at the time, but I do think he would've probably offered shelter for Albert when he stumbled upon him, but Albert refused because he wanted nothing to do with the Mondego family anymore.
Anyway, thank you so much for such a long comment! I love reading those, even if I don't have that much time to fully analyze them and reply in the most detailed way I can!
Ps. This scratch is open for all kinds of theories, although I might give you a hint: I liked this idea of a cutiemark scratch from an artwork by Kerslap (Fanart - Ink Potts ) where Fernand has the same scratch

First of all, thank you for your replay, I know it’s difficult for you to deal with the amount of comments you receive probably everyday, so I’m happy to see that you wanted spent your time to answer mine.
Second, in my previous comment I literally rambled with my words, because when it comes out to talk about Fernand or de Morcerf/Mondego family I can’t stop myself.
I perfectly know that Fernand’s death has a huge purpose (and contribution) for the story’s end and the morality/lesson Dumas wanted to teach us, to make Monte-Cristo aware that his revenge went too far away and became only a bloody massacre for selfish desire; as Heloise and Edouard’s death after, all deaths which bring the Count to forgive the most guilty of all of them, Danglars (who, after all, was the first to came up with the idea of the letter and literally involved Mondego, Caderousse and indirectly Villefort too) and finally achieve again forgiveness.
In fact, the possible Redemption idea, a path which Fernand can be still alive ecc., all of these are only ideas that have to remain headcanons, AUs, what if? and something I love only to dream about.
If the novel was ended in this way (much softer for the Count’s enemies/innocent victims) of course it wouldn’t have been great as it is. So, I can’t complain, because all the morality will be lost in order to have happy endings (all MC’s adaptations teach usunconsciously, that’s why I hate all the Edmond & Mercédès come together at the end, the change which makes Albèrt Monte Cristo’s son just to have the happy reunited family at the end *glares at the 2002 movie*) .
The reason I pointed out the fact that maybe, instead of just leave without a word, Albèrt and Mercédès could at least ask Fernand why he did what he did, it’s simply because a lack of communication like this is objectively wrong in any case, but for plot reasons Dumas decided to go with this way.
If it was for me, they could ask and after say farewell to him and leave, and after Fernand will shoot himself due to despair, making him die anyway, so the purpose of his suicide for the story would be here anyhow.
But I know this would be less dramatic than return home after see your castle of cards, everything you built, collapses this brutally and discover that your wife and your son, the most important people in your life, left you for your mistakes and flaws without saying even goodbye. All alone, he realized there’s no reason to live for anymore if he can’t be near them and only one thing can be done to “free them” forever for the dirt he brought on the Mondego’s family. For that times, the name of the family was more important than the family itself (something that hardly makes sense for me who lived in the modern century, and obviously I can’t approve), and only the culprit’s blood can wash away the guilt for everyone.
Oh, and about the idea of mine of who I would Shiny make to be in this cross-over, I only want to correct you and clarify one thing: I meant a older general who the alicorn could met when the latter joined the army, a stallion so worth of his subordinates’ admiration for his qualities on battlefields who maybe inspired Fernand to aspire in being a high-rank soldier as well, in order to accomplish something great for the country.
So, somepony who is not his brother or any relative of the Monsparkle family.
Sorry, maybe the way I wrote this before was not clear enough.
Ps. I saw long ago that fan-art too and somehow I imagine the scratch could be from that, but to be sure I wanted to ask in any case XD

Maybe he was in another country at the time with Cadence, far away from Fernand, so he just had absolutely no idea what's going on. He might've visited Fernand's house when he became Morcerf for a few times, and mostly he just wanted to see his nephew, but not more than that. Probably he was just busy with his own life.

Since there is barely to no information about Danglars, his family, his origins and even his friggin' name I don't think that Big Mac would work as well as Shining Armor did. Especially considering that Dumas probably told nothing about Danglars to highlight how much of an asshole he is and how much he's distant from any of his relatives. Maybe Danglars even could be an orphan! But, who knows, maybe you'll be able to make it work somehow as well.
