I Whistled Once

I whistled once, and watched the sound
as it forayed into the world outside
and, pausing, found itself possessed to hide.
I watched it travel farther, travel down
among the courtyard crickets out of mind and sight,
their stridulations singing in the gateless night
for peaceful dreamers and the sleepless folk.

And all of Twilight's silver smoke
had funneled up to hear the midnight ode,
while, in the ferns, my whistle softly strode,
alone and dripping with its dismal soak.
The crickets' song leaned sweetly on the nocturned air,
the dusk-fog danced within itself without a care,
and under low-hung leaves, my whistle cried.

How troublesome, the world outside,
which sees a nascent tinkling of the voice
left suffering, friendless in the endless noise.
I seldom think my whistle should have died,
but this—instead of sinking in a lunar curse,
it should have found a separate joy when interspersed
among the crying birds of Morning's sunswept gown.
