It was the same every year. They both hated it. April first was no longer a day to celebrate a birthday. It was a day to celebrate a lost life.

At least that was how Lissy tried to see it.

In some ways it got easier as the years went by. The loss never left, but it grew easier to live with. In other ways it only got worse. The big events he'd never see and the additions to the family he'd never meet. The way they looked older every year. The way he never would.

And that was just her. Lissy knew her own grief and sadness would never come anywhere close to George's. Who'd lost not only his best friend, but his twin. Someone who was still a part of him in death, but...missing.

Like every year, they woke early. They apparated outside of town and walked down the dirt road to the cemetery. They arrived just before dawn, as always. Fred's headstone sat at the edge of the plot, at the crest of the hill. Where the caretaker didn't really mow the grass very carefully and they could see the rolling hills of the English countryside.

George held a bouquet of fire flowers. One of the first things the three of them had invented together. One planted the seeds and they grew into fireworks. When they were picked, they'd only last for about twelve hours before they exploded into the sky. They'd leave the bouquet on the grave, and watch from the Burrow as they went off as the sun set. A last celebration...a riot of color and energy.

His other hand gripped hers. She brought her free hand up to hook around his elbow, hugging herself close to his side as they looked down at the headstone.

The words engraved on it were simple and plain. Giving no hint as to what kind of amazing person he'd been. The energy and happiness and light he'd brought to the world.

But they knew. That was what was important.

"Happy Birthday, Freddie." George said softly, slowly leaning down to set the Fire Flowers on the new grass. It would be burnt when they went off. A little mystery for the caretaker to find the next day. He would have liked that. And Lissy liked to believe that somewhere up there, he was liking it still.

And now for the resounding cries of "THAT WAS NOT OKAY" Don't worry, I agree. I'm very sad now...I've never gotten so emotional over a picture before...
