Leader Journal - Eagle Tribe

Day One
Such a lovely gift to be bestowed upon me by our generous Aztec leader. More
than just a pretty face, this journal means I am to take on a great challenge,
and if I succeed, become leader of the Eagle tribe.
Such a huge honor. Hamlet has already come by with his praise for making it
through the first round. But that was such an easy task in comparison to
this...
I'm sure the other Uuncas hoping to be leaders of their tribe have already begun
their journies. Perhaps I am a fool, but I have yet to leave my home. I spent
my day hitting the books, studying as much as I could about the fruit I have
been asked to find, my enemy, and, most importantly, riddles...
I have already chosen my play, and have weapons at the ready. I shall challenge
the Altrica to a duel of sly words. There is no chance of my outrunning them,
and certainly none of surviving a fight- this is how it must be done.
I will set out to find the dens tomorow. According to my books, it shouldn't
take more than two days to find them. I just have to be careful when I do...

Day Two
It's a more tiring trek through the forest than I had thought, but I hadn't
realised I woulf have so much company out here alone. I walked most of the day
on the ground, and there was always some creature or other following me or
peeking out of the bushes to see what an Uunca might want so far from home.
I got lucky when a couple of small birds dove into the bushes beside my feet to
hide from a large hawk, who, thinking he was the predator, was quite suprized to
be caught when he dove from the sky after the small birds.
His suprize didn't last long.
As I was walking along towards evening, I caught sight of a pair of eyes staring
at me from the other side of the clearing I was passing through. We looked at
each-other for a short time before it disappeared. I'm sure I'll never know
what it was.

Day Three
I was reminded of Hamlet this morning when I saw a male bird of paradise trying
to attract a female. I couldn't help but smile when she rejected him- she's so
much simpler, and he has all the fine feathers and colors, but she is the one
who calls the shots.
I guess some things just work that way.

Day Four
Halfway through the week, but maybe with time to spare, so long as nothing goes
wrong... I've reached the grounds where the Altrica live, I only need to find a
den in a tree, and challenge it's master to a duel of words, where my reward is
access to the fruit.
I have found a den and prepared my thoughts, and upon the rizing sun, I will
wake the Altrica with my request.

Day Five
I write from my place in a tree. I've gotten very far on my way home, between
my excitement and my giddy fear. I have an entire bag of the fruit slung across
my back, more than enough to hold over the mothers this birthing season, for
sure.
Seeing that Altrica in the morning nearly stopped my heart with pure terror.
The revolting creature was indeed a predator. I might've dropped dead right
there, and he surely would have devoured me...
The riddles flew back and forth so quickly. My challenge was accepted, but with
a twist- it was like a race. I could climb the tree every second that the
Altrica was guessing an answer, and the Altrica could come at me every second
that I spent guessing. Needless to say, both of us answered fast, and moved
faster. So many many riddles... at one point, his talons were nearly against my
back... I had taken the longest time to answer his sly riddle- "What have I got
in my pocket?", to which the answer was, of course, "a ring," as it was a
reference to the novel The Hobbit.
Not more than a few riddles later, the Altrica simply could not guess his
answer, and I dashed madly up the tree, into the den, snatcving the fruit and
running back down. I was a few hundred yards away when I heard him answering
furiously, "Y Not! Y Not!"
But I was long gone.
I ran for what felt like hours, and here I am. I am safe, he did not follow me,
and I am ready to sleep. Tomorow I will work on getting home... I cannot wait
to see my tribe again.

Day Six
"Tony saw it everywhere
In mirror and in sea
The metal comb that fixed his hair
In drewdrops upon a tree
His reflection was most obviously
The question Tony sought
The answer we will never see
But the question is..."

"Y Not". Tony backwards. What a clever girl I am! And tomorrow I shall arrive
home... and, if the stars have blessed me... I may become leader of the Eagle
tribe. There is no greater honor, nothing I would rather be. To take care of
my tribe is the greatest thing I can possibly do.

Day Seven
I write this morning from inside my own den. I did it... I completed my quest,
and I am home.
