EDIT: PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING [link]This is in no way an attack on Alicorns, or people who have Alicorn characters. This is merely an attempt at a fun way to explain why having wings and a horn is considered an overpowered trait in the MLP fandom. I realise that it is possible to have an interesting and well developed Alicorn character.
If you're at all part of the My Little Pony OC fandom you will know that there is a certain stigma attached to OC Alicorns (a pony with both a unicorn horn and pegasus wings). It has come to my attention that some of the people who create alicorn OC's are unaware of why they are so frowned upon. So I made this little chart to explain.
Under each pony type are the traits associated with the type [link] . Not every pony will fit perfectly into their type, but these are the basic guidelines.
Alicorns are considered godlike because the alicorns on the show are generally very powerful, with abilities such as raising the sun and moon, and creating love. Alicorns are also the rarest type of pony, with only a few appearing in the show.
So basically creating an alicorn is creating a super amazing rare powerful beautiful being, which is frowned upon in most OC fandoms. No matter how carefully designed, or well developed an alicorn character is, it often won't be taken seriously amongst the fandom upon first glance.
If you want a pony character like this, then go ahead. It's just considered to be the equivalent of Superman in the world of superheroes. Very overpowered and less flawed than others.

Hey, Alicorns are not OP; they have flaws, too. The only reason why Celestia was able to banish Luna as Nightmare Moon to the Moon was because of the Elements of Harmony.

You know I don't see very many earth ponies. At least not where I've been. Usually it's unicorn and pegasus ponies. I have an earth pony named Drawn Risk. I haven't really posted art of her on here but she's an adventure pony.

Alicorn we`re never godlike. I have no ideo how people think that it is that way. Never ever did someone say that they we`re that way. I don`t belive that they are stronger or anything like that. I find it so stupid how some ( not most) Alicorn Oc`s are better then normal ponys. And even more so, if they we`re from a clan or something that we`re only Alicorns.

well even tho they seem godlike have you seen sun butt she has twilight do stuff cause she cant and even then twi has to use the elements of friend ship she couldn't even win a fight against glimmer butt sure you could argue what about the cute flurry bum but even then her powers were stopped by an unicorn and superman could be stopped and cant do everything but yea whatever im just saying and also batmans better

If I was making a alicorn character, it would have flaws that stand for interactions than being godlike.

No, they do not in the show, that is only relevant in fan-based conversations with stuff that would be cool in the show but has and never will happen.

- Maybe Ponyville was founded 100 years ago, so Granny is just pretty old
- Slice of life is not really canon and that quote was just a wink to the Doctor who fandom

hell no I would never make my alicorn oc godlike. nooononono.
If anything, my pony would still be the same with the exception that they can perhaps harness stronger magic (except it will take a LONG time to master, I wouldn't make them able to do it right off the bat) and being able to fly. People who slap the 'sue' labels on alicorns obviously don't take the time to get to know the character.

Is it bad that my oc is an alicorn? The thing is, I made her before I was very familiar with all the concepts of mlp and the "Mary sue" thing and I just couldn't decide to make her a unicorn or Pegasus. But she's not godlike at all. She's actually really shy and clumsy and messes things up..... Alot....

Since when were Alicorns "Godlike"? Celestia can't even move her sister to the moon without the aid of the elements. Is she powerful? Yes. Godlike? Heck no. I have my own category for that.

This chart is exceptionally accurate in the definition of all the species. I am a somewhat new member of the community (I started watching the show and conversing with other bronies just after season 3 was released), and, looking back on my past ocs, and comparing them to my new ocs, I believe I have improved quite a bit. The trouble with oc-making is after you see quite a few ocs, you're tempted to make your own. And if you're like me, unfortunately, the first ocs you saw were alicorns. So, of course, you would make an alicorn.
Every time I see stuff like this (alicorn ocs, not your drawing), it makes me wish we had some sort of 'welcoming committee' to the fandom, that might warn against doing this, or giving your oc that, or whatever. I know it sounds sort of cheesy, but it's mainly because I feel really sorry for the people who are censured for their very mary-suish, black and red, alicorn oc, which was inspired by the work of others around them. It's not really their fault they ran into the wrong crowd. It's just what happened.

i read some of the comment and i do agree some peoples oc alicorns are op and are mary sue BUT i see why. see when i first joined the fandom twilight just became a alicorn and i throught if she can be a alicorn why cant my oc be one too.and fell into the trape of alicorn ocs i didnt even give her a name i put so little throught in to her. i did a at least 5 diffent ocs some one alicorn 2 unicorns a earth pony and finaly a pegasus and i as finally happy with it and my oc is the picture next to my commet and i am finally happy with it so dont be too cruel to them if they are new to the fandom but if they are not new to the fandom bad coment and mean comment to your hearts contence or your fingers get to tired from all the typing. i wont be joind though

Not all alicorns are sues/OP, from what I see, people just hate them because the haters just want Luna and Celestia, when fact is our alipowns will NEVER, EVER be canon AND they get butthurt when princess Cadance gets brought up. People just auto-label Alicorns as sues because they wanna be that freakin person.
Alipons ponies have been around loooong before FIM, in fact, it was normal back then, and not everyone is going to apply to FIM rules. Not all alicorns are sues/OP, I've seen cute and decent ones pulled off
I'm sad that Alipon characters are discriminated, because I know some really good Alicorn oc's they wanna show and share with people,
And never get the chance because of this hatred.

I really think that alicorns have more than just being godlike. They are rulers and protectors and will do just about anything for the ponies that they rule. There are 2 examples i can think of:
1: Celestia banished her own sister to the moon for 1,000 years so the ponies of equestria would be safe and could live in happiness.
2: Cadence used almost all her magic and energy to protect the crystal ponies from King Sombra.

This sums up the typical alicorn sue.
However, I did see an alicorn OC that I liked once; he (yes he) was from a universe where there were alicorns to represent things like the forces of nature, the elements, and aspects of life. Despite his alicorn-ness, he was pretty well done, to say the least. His Cutie Mark was well thought out, as well. He represented change, and his CM was an ars arcum, which is an alchemy symbol, and alchemy is based on change.

I gotta agree with you. Alicorn OC's are not called "Mary Sues" for nothing. There is a good reason. The whole fact that they can fly and use magic is kind of making them a little Mary Sue in my opinion. You're totally right about the godlike. Actually, I think that Alicorns were made to be the most special ponies in the show from the beginning of it. Well, if Celestia and Luna can control the Sun and the Moon, that makes them very important for the other ponies. And they're called princess. I guess that this is another reason for people, which are making Alicorn OC's, to call them "princesses". I don't know, I just kinda dislike these Alicorn OCs because of the fact that some of them think that they can have everything they want and can be a royalty, like princess Luna and Celestia.
And this is just my opinion.
And I feel more than happy to have a pegasus OC, which is not immortal. I mean, nothing lives forever, so are we.

In my fanfiction the Silverfox Chronicles, I expand upon the topic of alicorns (Where they come from, how they are created, etc) and one of the main characters is one. However, he is not god-like in any aspect, he simply has the power of an above average, sorta like pre-Princess Twilight. I hate how people automatically put down any alicorn OC, and I do mock this in said fanfiction.
I just think people need to at least give them a chance. They can still be good characters.

the alicorns are more than god like they don't just have wings and a horn they are a combination of all three types of ponies together they have all of the aspects of all the ponies they are strong like earth ponies, can fly like a pegasus , and have magical abilities like unicorns they are more than godlike.
