Description
King Diego and Queen Rosa.
Long ago a star fell from the sky and landed in the hands of an alchemist Diego who wished himself to become king in his land. The star held powers of wish granting, so in an act of gluttonous greed, Diego consumed the star to become a wish master. In this act he created the dark arts as shown in it's signature green hue. He married a princess named Rosa and made her is queen. Together they started granting the wishes of their people as a tradition. Rosa hoped this would make the world a better place. Meanwhile Diego was granting wishes for irresponsible reasons. As soon as their son was born Diego saw in him great potential, so he proclaimed him as Prince Magnifico. To prove it he even gave his son blessings. Blessings to make him handsome, strong, but above all magical. The young prince was spoiled by the king, but the king eventually acted indifferent to his own son. Clearly wishes and the magic they carried were far more important than being a father. So Rosa took her son under her wing and they'd spend hours in her rose garden. To Magnifico his mother could grow the most beautiful roses in the world. She would lecture him on the importance of finding happiness and hoped it would spread to their people. The two became very close as a result.
His father's addiction to the dark arts were starting to go to his head and one day he granted a wish that backfired. As to what that wish was, no one seemed to remember, for no one was left alive who remember it. The Spanish Inquisition was tipped off by the mysterious kingdom that seemingly sprouted from nowhere and granted wishes of all sorts. Clearly this was the world of witchcraft. The kingdom was attacked and burned to the ground, the king and queen were executed as heretics. Magnifico was almost captured too until an aspiring astronomer Tomas had found him first and the pair could escape using the secret tunnel in the castle. They met with a few refugees including Amaya. Together they fled to an abandoned island and set up a modest camp. Magnifico only had three items he managed to safe from the fire. His royal tapestry to show proof of his kingdom. His mother's rose pendent which he kept clipped to his belt at all times now. And his father's spell book. Magnifico he grown to resent his father for what had happened, even now he himself was now tainted with the addiction of dark magic. He was tempted to burn it several times in his youth.... but it was the last thing he had to remember his father by and couldn't bring himself to do it. So he made an enchanted case to keep it safe and only he could open it.... Just in case.
After the attack the young king proclaimed all unauthorized magic as forbidden, only he the king could grant it. His surviving people were shattered and broken. Their families scattered or worse and their homeland burned to ash. Together with Amaya and her creative eye for architecture they made their new kingdom together and dubbed it Rosas in honor of their fallen queen who made it her life's ambition to grant the wishes of the less fortunate. Magnifico missed her so much. As a way to show their love for her he had the craftsmen make the signature rose seals everywhere. They were to be worn on the people's clothes, hand painted into the fresco and tiles. She had to be everywhere just like his own idols, there to be worshiped like a god. Magnifico knew he had some narcissistic tendencies with a sprinkle of OCD, but he could never admit his faults. He was going to make a new kingdom and do it ten times better than his father. He had his own system in place for the refugees to be put to work tilling the land, his best friend and advisor Tomas was studying the stars and their magic documenting them in many books he kept in the castle, and Amaya was now his beloved queen.... But it seemed life kept spitting in Magnifico's face.
First Tomas in his efforts to lead their followers from the motherland to Rosas was captured and put to death for heresy. His beloved wife Queen Amaya kept miscarrying, and when they tried to wish for a child of their own the dark magic seemed to corrupt their daughter's magic. Even worse, Magnifico could sense his powers weakening. His wish granting festivals were now limited to one wish a month. The graying king brooded in his laboratory for hours taking secret hits of dark magic just to keep going. He grew to resent the wishes he was tasked to grant. How dare his people be happy with getting something they didn't deserve while he did all this and was given nothing for his troubles. His legacy was dying. His worries of a wish backfiring lingered in the back of his mind. Though all the wishes he was given were good at heart, he wondered what wish was the one that ruined his father's kingdom back home. Not knowing was the worst part it seemed. So he got into the habit of hording the wishes he felt uncomfortable by. Sometimes over something so simple as to wish to be a better person than before. In his eyes no one was allowed to be better.... he was the king.Β
