Matthew Gray Gubler, as himself for a change! Because we all love the way he smiles. I know it.
This was probably the +most+ +difficult+ drawing I've made in my life. A wide smile is always tricky, could easily lead to an Epic Fail. Or at least, you could get that blank stare from your friends, meaning: "Didn't you say he was HANDSOME?"
Anyway... *cough* *cough*
Yeah... The toy dinosaur and rubber ducky on the background are a cheap trick to distract your attention from the flaws. Because there have to be some, somewhere, I don't know.
**Tools: HB mechanical pencil, 3B pencil, charcoal pencil. No tracing, no grids, just good old freehand.

How do you do his hair? And the shading is magnificent. I'm an aspiring artist, and I love Spencer Reid, so when I saw this, I almost died! How do you do your works? Like, what pencils do you use, what paper, anything that could help me draw like you! I love all of your drawings of Reid (I have them all saved).

Wow. Just, wow. I have such respect for "good old freehand." I know how difficult portraits are and #1 commend you for the balls it takes to attempt a smile like this and #2 for the SKILLS it takes to pull it off so nicely! It doesn't appear overworked or fretted over (like so much of mine seem to.)

Thanks! It took about 4 hours, actually. And only because it was a really challenging expression, usually I'm quicker with portraits. I tend to get bored easily.
