thank you.
you (in canada) should have seen such quiet summer-days near the lazy river. singing birds, a distant croaking frog, craneflies are the only cause for inconvenience.... have i painted a nice word-picture?

spanishrubi In reply to wholba [2006-05-19 22:50:17 +0000 UTC]

We have those, yes, depending on where you might be. It is lovely to sit by the river (if you have one handy) and just listen and contemplate around you. You must have beautiful places over there too!

Mai.

wholba In reply to spanishrubi [2006-05-20 05:29:36 +0000 UTC]

yeah, we have such places, a lot of them. suiting every possible mood!
in different opinion polls both inhabitants and foreigners state that austria has a very remarkable and beautiful nature. and this is also my impression.... if you ever have the time and money: visit austria!

btw. you sign with "Mai". is this your first name? and do you know that the german name for the month "May" is "Mai"?

Mai is my nickname. Maria is my realy name. And, not, I diidn't know until now.

I would love to travel, for sure! I'll have to keep that in mind for the future. Time and money, yes... we need both.

Takecare,
Mai.

Such a lovely work of art! I want to be here. I almost hear the water rushing and feel the shining!
When you can transport someone to another time... another place... with some color and the stroke of your hand... you know your work is worthwhile... reminds me of my childhood and grandma's old place... oh to be there once more!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wholba In reply to carefulwhatyawishfor [2005-09-09 14:28:00 +0000 UTC]

thank you for your friendly words.
it reminds me also of some scenes i've seen during my childhood. i can nearly smell the distinctive aroma of these sunny summer-afternoons, then.... i was the great trapper, or the valiant knight in shimmering armor, the bloody corsair, the beloved prince from fairy tales, the chief of the iroquoise or sioux,...... you know, what is meant.

immediately after i came across the reference-pic in a newspaper this reminiscent memories led to the urge: i have to paint this! you understood? i have had to paint it!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

carefulwhatyawishfor In reply to wholba [2005-09-09 15:24:52 +0000 UTC]

oh yes! ... and if only we could make time for all those great things we have the urge to paint! i am a bottomless pit of ideas!!! would be nice to have 48 hours in a day (for me at least)!!!

btw, i love the pictures you paint with your words, too, your comments are as beautiful as your paintings... both make me smile!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wholba In reply to carefulwhatyawishfor [2005-09-09 21:33:55 +0000 UTC]

yes, you are right. the days should sometimes be longer....

and i'm happy that i was able to transport this vocal-painting over this language border. it's not always possible (for me at least), but me thinks here i've had success. thank you!

to cause a smile is always good. regardless if this smile appears on my face, on yours or somebody else's... it's one of the things which make one's life lifeworthy. yesh, indeed! smile, grin, laugh and your day is a good one.

Ok, maybe I'm wrong, but is it a lake, swamp or WATER (in general)?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wholba In reply to Morinoki [2005-01-01 18:20:17 +0000 UTC]

hello
no, its a river. a very 'natural' river. the river "kamp", which is one of the last in middle-europe which was left (for the greatest part) alone. i.e. the surrounding nature is in an 'original' state. a very beautiful river.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Morinoki In reply to wholba [2005-01-01 18:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh, then it's a relief... ^__^ Because the title says that it's a meadow and I was confused a bit... So now I can say - the painting is beautiful, has the same mystic aura of an old, natural, unspoiled river... And your skills in watercolour painting are on a really high level... Tell me, are you a professionalist? Did you study art?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wholba In reply to Morinoki [2005-01-01 19:10:26 +0000 UTC]

tx for you friendly words.
no, i'm wether a professional nor have i done any study in arts. i'm just a pure (and poor) evening artist.

Morinoki In reply to wholba [2005-01-01 20:26:00 +0000 UTC]

You know, if I were there, I would have spanked you for that "POOR" thing!
Then you're really amazing - to develope art skills so well just by yourself, while treating art as a hobby... I congratulate you honestly (and am jealous a bit )!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wholba In reply to Morinoki [2005-01-01 20:35:33 +0000 UTC]

oh no, don't spank me... please!
"the poor thing": i've meant it this way: because to this day only one piece is sold, i haven't received much money. so, i must be poor.

Morinoki In reply to wholba [2005-01-01 20:45:43 +0000 UTC]

lot of work in it. yes, you could see the nature itself. make a vacations trip to austria, and visit the river "kamp" on the very northern edge of this country. the original painting is hanging on the wall of my living room.

it was a lenghty job to do this....

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Fenster In reply to wholba [2004-12-04 09:05:06 +0000 UTC]

I bet it was, layering on the watercolors. I think many would-be great artists are conquered by the amount of time involved in creating a good eye, leaf, finger, let alone the entire composition. When I started art school I was suprised to realize that even my teachers had to spend days and days on a drawing until they were fully satisfied. So it's not magic, it's just practice, focus, and time. I'm still working on the patience and focus part, tweak, tweak, adjust adjust aaaaahhhh!
How do you get your proportions correct? Right now I'm working on 3 portraits, and I've been printing them out at full size, and mesuring onto the paper at a 1:1 ratio. I just can't get it correct by sight alone yet.
That lion you did was really cool - the colors really set it off on the black backround, reminded me of sunset colors...

Anyway I'm just yammering on, I better get to bed...

Keep up the good work

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wholba In reply to Fenster [2004-12-04 10:15:47 +0000 UTC]

yes, lot of time and patience....
proportions: for drawings i usually make a very lightly drawn sketch on the final paper, only to see if the proportions are right and everything is on the proper place. for the same purpose in watercolors i invariably begin with heavily diluted layers. i dont measure because i feel, that by measuring some artistic interpretations get lost.
lion: very well, an intended effect...
