Description This is my first time attempting something like this. I am also trying to improve my skill with watercolours as I am pretty poor at utilizing them at the moment.

No reference photo used, though I was inspired to attempt something like this by a user named 'agnes-cecile'. I used watercolour (hurr durr), pen and white paint.

This was also supposed to be a test - just trying different things/techniques- but it turned out alright, so I decided to post it. Apologies for the bad quality, it was taken with and iPod, haha.

Please leave a comment with criticism or compliments, thanks

Well thank you!
Yeah, the paper I was using was actually sketch paper, haha, so as you can imagine it didn't cater to watercolour very well. But I have some watercolour paper now, though.
Thanks for your advice, good luck with your all your endeavors, haha (:

No problem!
What kind of watercolor paper do you have now?

Sound pretty good But I'd still avoid using wet-on-wet techniques on that, it's pretty thin c:

Yeah, it's not ideal, but thicker paper is more expensive and being fourteen without a job, money is fairly hard to come by, haha.

Canson Montval is a fairly cheap paper that I bought several packets of while I was in school they're sometimes sold in packets of two during sales so you get two for one

Ah, okay, I probably won't have that, though, being in a different country. But then, there is always the Internet, haha.

This is quite good, the only detail worth mentioning is the proportion of the head, other than that this is quite nice.

I think that this is an effective test! I love what you did with the wings...That's quite a beautiful idea! YOu may not have mastered watercolors yet, but you are well on your way! Also, have you ever tried watercolor pencils?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhoMax In reply to she1badelf [2012-04-17 08:47:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, practice makes perfect so I'll hopefully better myself with time!

Yes, I have tried watercolour pencils, but only briefly, I used them in another painting 'rainforest scene' (I think that's what I called it, I can't remember, haha, it's in my gallery but I'm too lazy to check, yet I took the time to write all this...). I think they provide a more precise painting, but I haven't really experimented with them all that much. What do you think?

she1badelf In reply to WhoMax [2012-04-18 00:05:00 +0000 UTC]

I like using the pencils along side regular watercolors, mostly because it makes it easier to get brighter, truer pigment in precise areas. They also make some awesome effects when bleach, salt, or rubbing alcohol are added to the dry pencil pigments.

"They also make some awesome effects when bleach, salt, or rubbing alcohol are added to the dry pencil pigments."

I did not know about that, now I'll have to try them, haha. Thanks

I usually just use salt and alcohol primarily...They're not as intimidating as the bleach . And you're welcome!

Rakaseth [2012-04-13 14:32:38 +0000 UTC]

Very interesting, at first when I saw it I thought that the bird was sort of exploding almost; then I thought maybe it was just the wing. I like how you can look at it in either way.

Haha, thanks, I never really saw it that way before you said that.

I like the energy and movement. But his body and wings are too small perhaps.

WhoMax In reply to simone4390 [2012-04-12 22:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

Yeah, as I mentioned, I didn't reference a picture of a bird so proportions were purely spawned from my head, and my head is often incorrect, haha.

I have to admit this is a pretty awesome concept you got here but i think you just need to work on the background and tail feather, the tail feather just doesnt fit

I'd recommend getting some watercolor paper, and acquiring references of different birds that you think are cool. You could make some really nice work if you develop this skill/work!

Hint: work from dark to light, leaving the white of the paper as highlights. Hope that helps!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhoMax In reply to IanC3 [2012-04-11 22:27:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this was just sketch paper, haha.

I didn't actually reference the bird off any pictures, I just splashed some water down, them some colours and thought it kind of looked like a bird wing.

Thanks for the tips
