Description a few nights ago, i had a dream I was at a seaport, watching a locomotive parade. What I remember most from that dream was a gargantuine locomotive of epic proportions. It was a 0-8-8-8-8-4+4-8-8-8-8-0T. Midway between the two boilers, was a large controll room like "cab" with more than two stories. Under the cab were presumably electrically driven drive wheels much like that on a GG1 or an older electric locomotive.

Understandably the locomotive here was drawn as an 0-8-8-8-4-etc, i wanted to fit the cab into the picture, as well as some of the other half. Note the Dual piston valves and quadruple transverse chimneys. Also there are draft fans on the side of the locomotive.

I would assume a locomotive like this would be used for a task such as pulling mineral trains 10 miles long, over a long straight stretch of track for many miles.

It would be easier if it was articulated with each unit separate of the main body. As for gauge I estimate it to beΒ  Brunel gauge (2.14m) or Indian gauge (1.676m)

It did not need articulation because it ran on straight track for miles, and the gauge was standard.

I actually forgot that this picture existed. What a horrid dream that was, this picture makes no sense X_x

knowing that what is seen is about half the length of it (other side of the cab) I would hate to be a pipefitter, fireman, or cleaner on this beast of a locomotive. If I were the engineer however, I'd be whistling down the line, looking at the extremely jelly trackside people staring in awe. (also the mineral trains this is gonna pull are going to make many people that are late for something absolutely RAGE, so I would probably shout U MAD BRO under the panting and chuffing of the engine)

dude this version of the locomotive is shorter than was in the dream, i just drew it like as is for convenience sake XD and as far as chuffing goes, it makes the noise sort of like a SAR 25C www.youtube.com/watch?v=WueHGO… (first engine in the shot is red devil)

thank you for all the comments and kind things btw.

It's not every day someone draws a picture of a dream he/she had. Still, I wouldn't be far from surprised to see this thing on the tracks. Compared to the long-as-a-heck trains pulled by engines in America, this one would totally take the cake and run over it with its many wheels.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhyAyeMann777 In reply to holmesman [2014-02-08 04:21:16 +0000 UTC]

I would be VERY surprised to see this running down the tracks, for no railroad would be willing to invest in such a complex machine as this. But yes, it would kick ass at hauling lengthy trains.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

holmesman In reply to WhyAyeMann777 [2014-02-08 05:09:53 +0000 UTC]

Maybe if someone were to open a railway and would actually want to invest in this locomotive, it would have to be the only locomotive on the whole railway. Those trains will be hauled without the locomotive breaking a sweat.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhyAyeMann777 In reply to holmesman [2014-02-08 15:23:38 +0000 UTC]

Id have to think of a railway that would be able to support this engine. I also have to mention, Im not entirely sure on how this locomotive would work, seeing as it was a subconscious idea, but there would be lots and lots of cooling turbines for a high tech condensing system, a whole lot of waterfeed pumps and pre-heaters out the wazoo and a boiler that would probably run within the 800-1,200 PSI range (although i didnt draw a whole lot of evidence of compounding.)

I've been getting some interesting questions regarding this engine lately, so there may be a chance of me drawing another picture of it.

as far as the reality goes for this engine, any investment in the locomotive would be like an investment towards something like a space shuttle. Except its every strange idea ever conseived for a steam locomotive, and there is no guarantee that she'll work properly at all without tremendous man power. (but when asked why knowing this and still talking part in the development construction and operation of this super locomotive would lead to the overworking of his workforce and the total and utter bankruptcy of his railway, mister christopher reply'd, "because it was cool.")

id run it for the lulz.

I really didn't want to take that literally. Nonetheless, I decided to make a list of locomotives, so here I go:

1. A Queensland PB-15 Class locomotive with a modified tender that allows it to carry cargo without the aid of rolling stock.

2. A Glaskasten steam locomotive with helicopter blades on its roof, which grants the locomotive with the ability of fly like a helicopter; this especially comes in handy when the locomotive is forced to stop at a broken signal.

3. A Sturrock goods engine with a hydraulic claw instead of a steam dome.

4. A diesel shunter with solar panels powering its generator instead of a regular engine (sorry I'd say I list STEAM locomotives, buuuuut.... I guess not).

5. A GER Class A55 (aka the Decapod) with a modified firebox that determines when the locomotive should stop operating; the locomotive's funnel lets off different colors of steam (green, yellow, or red) depending on how much the locomotive works. It's pretty clear what the colors of the steam represent.

6. Two narrow-gauge Plymouth diesel shunters that carry fire-fighting attachments (one has a fire hose, while the other has a searchlight).

7. A Fairlie-type locomotive that usually runs on narrow-gauge rails, but with two giant wheels on its side that are capable of fitting onto standard-gauge rails, enabling the locomotive to run on both standard-gauge AND narrow-gauge railway lines.

8. A slew of locomotives based on construction machines; examples include a forklift diesel shunter, a cross between a front loader withΒ Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0WT (named Bronllwyd), a steam tram/steam shovel hybrid, andΒ steam roller-like locomotive that can flatten bumpy rails instead of having new rails be built ontop the old and bumpy ones.

So, there's my list so far. What do you think? It's okay if most of the classes for these engines are unfamiliar to you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhyAyeMann777 In reply to holmesman [2014-02-09 15:58:32 +0000 UTC]

before i go into uber critical mode, were you making this list as like "serious idea's that should happen" or were you just making a list for shits and grins?

Well.... if you must know, I have had the idea for a Thomas the Tank Engine series on YouTube for years, and these ideas for engines are going to be characters in my series. I've always been fascinated with locomotives thanks to Thomas, and out of all the new things that are constantly introduced, I probably look forward to new engines the most.Β

Each new engine practically defines variety in character design, and it's especially unique how HiT Entertainment was able to go beyond the boundaries of realism and introduce engines with modifications like hydraulic claws and fire-fighting water cannons. Most of the fans turn most of these as unrealistic and not, dare I freaking say it, appropriate for railway use, but I am not scared to be honest in saying it's what allows these locomotives to go beyond what other locomotives are already capable of doing.
