Description Hmm, this seems to be a picture of mystery. What are those girls talking about? Are they making fun of Mandark (like he seems to think)? Are Lee Lee and Mee Mee teasing Dee Dee about her secret crush? Or maybe the secret is that Dee Dee and Mandark are trying to keep their relationship on the downlow. Who knows?

Bg referenced from "Picture Day" and "Dexter's Rival". Eh, this didn't turn out quite like I intended but I liked the concept.

My guess is that the girls are telling Dee Dee they heard a rumor about her and Mandark dating and they think it's hilarious. After all, who would date a dork like him? Little do they know that the rumor is true...

Regardless, this is so cute~

Possibly. I'm also willing to be that Dee Dee and Mandark are keeping their relationship on the down low so nobody finds out and makes fun of them, especially Dexter.

I'm probably the wrong one to ask since it is one of my favorites!

I seek meaning in the artworks I sample.Β  Believe me, I really want to understand this show.Β  It has a nice visual style, I'll give it that.Β  But it contains few funny jokes and memorable stories; in fact, some of the episodes just rip off other media (Road Rash and Mock 5 come to mind).Β  On top of that, the show's atmosphere is just unpleasant to sit through.Β  I'll be generous and say 98% of the episodes seem tailored specifically to torture Dexter for the purpose of torture.Β  Mean-spiritedness works best when it happens to those who deserve it.Β  While I can buy the idea that Dexter can cause some of his own misery, most of the time that clearly isn't the case.Β  I want to understand, but whoever's to blame for these problems hasn't (haven't) made it easy.

Peanuts is considered the uber-definition of optimism and persistence in trying circumstances, even if theirs was blind.Β  Also, while I'm one of the few who genuinely dislikes Ren & Stimpy (and not JUST the Adult Party episodes), it did take the dynamic of straight-up person and wiseacre and deconstructed it (mostly the straight-up half).Β  So I guess I can respect them for those things.

Now what exactly am I supposed to get out of THIS show?Β  I mean, for a while I figured it was trying to strike some kind of balance between the simplicity of Peanuts and the uber-absurdity of Ren & Stimpy.Β  But then, I could make the same case for other 1990s programs like CatDog, Angry Beavers, Rugrats, Darkwing Duck, Aladdin, Quack Pack, Bonkers, Hercules, and 101 Dalmations.Β  Let's ignore the Monkey and Justice Friends segments, post-Ego Trip episodes (the ones Genndy Tartakovsky mostly had no hand in) and the whole persistence angle for a moment.Β  What exactly does Dexter's
Lab do that wasn't already done by those other series, or anything that came later?Β  What does Dexter's Lab accomplish that those shows couldn't?Β  How exactly did it put Cartoon Network on the map?

MightyMewtron In reply to One-Concerned [2016-08-08 06:42:27 +0000 UTC]

late reply, but my personal interpretation is that it established the tone for cartoon networks original series- often dealing with bizarre concepts, or something bizarre in a world that totally contrasts it (see the contrast between Dexter and Dee Dee).Β
that, and on a meta level, it was early work for a lot of successful show runners and writers of the future, like Seth macfarlane (even though I don't personally like his work), Craig McCracken, and Chris Savino.
but even if it didn't do anything groundbreaking for animation as a whole, it's still fun to a lot of people. I personally like the aesthetic and the slapstick and the surrealism and the good use of foil characters.

Wickfield In reply to One-Concerned [2015-08-25 12:43:08 +0000 UTC]

It put CN on the map as being it's first original series, and does a great job of combining retro Hanna-Barbera styling with 90s comedic attitudes and pop culture references - and you have to love the tributes to classic Japanese films and animes! Β Otherwise I think you are taking it too seriously. Β

Agreed. She just calls him a dork because she doesn't wanna be teased at school or hurt Dexter's feelings for liking his rival. She thinks he's cute and likes that he's smart without patronizing her like Dexter.
