Meet the Gigantopithecus. This giant primate is the largest ape ever known. Gigantopithecus might have inspired the legendary Abominable Snowman or Yeti, along with its cousins. However, Gigantopithecus died out during the Pleistocene epoch, meaning that the real-life Yeti is no more. That is, until scientists found a new real-life Yeti. Turns out it's a completely different creature called the Himalayan brown bear. Unlike Gigantopithecus, brown bears belong in the order of Carnivora. They're thought to be the origin of the Yeti legend, as they have been seen walking through the snow on two legs. Brown bears mostly stand on two legs to get a better view or make a very threatening pose.
