Hundreds of years ago, these two canids were the same species, the golden jackal. Then in 2015, scientists found out that the African golden jackal is really another canid called the African golden wolf. This recently-discovered species of canid plays a prominent role in some African cultures. While the golden wolf replaces all the golden jackal subspecies in the African continent, the golden jackal is still around in Asia and parts of Europe.
