Description Want to know what the leaf-cutter ants eat? It's not the leaves. It's fungus! Here how it works. First, the leaf-cutter ant uses its specially adapted jaw that "saws" off pieces of leaves. Then, it carries the leaf back to its colony. A leaf-cutter ant can lift 50 times its own weight. Next, the leaf-cutter ant places the leaf on the pile of leaves, in which they get dissolved by the fungus. And finally, the fungus gets eaten by the leaf-cutter ants. If fungus supply gets low, the leaf-cutter ants will always go back outside of the colony to gather more leaves.
