Description One of my favourite bird families, the sight of these huge birds, whose wing-beats can be heard miles away, is one of the great experiences of the Asian Forests which still disappear at an increasing rate despite all we think we've learned recently.

A large Oil of Pied Hornbills which got me accepted into 'Birds in Art' for a second time and recently sold to a lovely couple in England.
Having been from Queensland to Wisconsin, then to NYC (where it was hung in a Madison Ave gallery), and from there to the UK, this could be my most well-travelled piece.

Considering I haven't left the country since it was painted I am a tad jealous!

(The perspicacious will notice the apparent anomaly twixt picture and title - the truly perspicacious will work it out, the vast majority won't give a toss!)

Absolutely stunning painting, as is apparently all of your work The detail is breath-taking but something that sticks out to me even more is the fact you captured the Jizz of this bird. Jizz is a fancy abbreviation for 'general impression of size and shape' but it goes beyond that. That 'thing' about an animal that's really characterisitc of it or the whole species, but which you just can't put your finger on. Often it is a matter of shapes or proportions which are/is amazingly difficult to capture. However, you managed perfectly here, very impressive And concerning the title, I just have to give this a shot: three as in this are a male and female Great hornbill, and the third one is the unborn/hatched egg inside of the female?

Hehe, thanks for playing but no chocolates!! The title is really about the triangular composition, but I've explained it in more detail in my reply to Jac888 below. But damn good try!
Don't you hate that jizz has picked up less savoury connotations! I find that every time I use it I have to explain lest people think I'm a total (for lack of a better word) deviant! (or that I'm talking about "There's something about Mary")
To me though it's hugely important, especially now I'm working on a field guide! Similar looking species can often be easily told by the jizz, and I always do a bit of sketching to get a feel for it. It's easy for birds I know well, otherwise it's off to Flickr where I get at least 300 pics (sometimes 3000!) to work from. Fortunately I can do this in a few clicks thanks to a brilliant program called 'Bulk image downloader'. (google it!). Only avail. for Win unfortunately as I mostly use an iMac. The downside is that my "Birds" folder weighs in at just under a Terabyte! Thanks again Namu, mean to go on like Hehe, thanks for playing but no chocolates!! Thanks again Namu, didn’t mean to go on like an old woman, i'm off to have a better look at your stuff, intrigued with what I've seen so far, it looks brilliant!

Thanks Namu, sexual dimorphism is something I'm really working on with the iBird illustrations. We used to do males, females, juves etc on different plates, but now I'm doing the M&F's as pairs, plus it allows for much more interesting compositions. This in turn means I'm looking for birds with some level of dimorphism, like this Redstart pair: [link] It's also much easier to see subtle differences when both sexes are on a single plate (the fact that I get paid more for them makes no difference whatsoever... much) XD

Yeah, Jizz surely is getting a whole different meaning... Luckily I don't have to speak about it with too many people that could take it wrongly (or I explain what it is straight away). Ah, and interesting about the triangular composition, I read about it in your reply and - as always - once I know it it's very hard to unsee Yes, and that is what so many field guides lack nowadays. They mention all the stripes and dots and colours, while the difference between two species might really be simply in their expression. Oh wow, one terrabyte of bird pics, that would surely get the job done! Oh, I love it when people post lengthy replies, so please don't apologise

Nicely done. Why is it named 'three'? Am I missing something here?

Aha! you fell into my trap! I wanted to see if a title could make people view a piece differently, in this case look for a third bird! However the word was already in my head because I had based the entire composition around triangular lines and shapes, in fact the first thing I did was to draw big black (raw umber and ultramarine in reality, I dont use black!) lines in the centre forming a triangle with an upside-down triangle superimposed. These became the birds and the branches respectively, and then I threw a few more tris around to finish the lines of the branches and background (without being obvious or harsh). Thanks Jac, take care!

now that you mentioned it ... I see them triangles ...

The title did force me to think through the image rather than just see it. But on a defensive note (since it was a trap) I would say I never looked for the third bird ...

lol I thought I was seeing some three horned bills or something like that (yeah I know that's rather dumb)
