The flash of a blade

Scarlet blood poured
From his wound

‘No!’

My voice broke the deadly silence
Another silence followed
Broken this time only by the sound
Of my beloved teacher’s body
Falling lifeless to the ground

‘No. Master, why?’

Scarlet tears splashed on his face
My face burned from ear to eye
I realized that Master Drake’s
Blade had struck home

Glanced down at the limp
Dark body in my arms
What I saw startled me
A look possessed his face
A look that I had longed to see there
Since meeting him eleven years ago

Pride! Pride shined in his eyes
For just the barest moment
And a smile on his lips
Now true tears fell from me
My love had not protected him from me

Groped blindly at his belt
Extracted the blade that had dealt that final blow

My wound was but a scar
