No raven in this dream, Bertha’s subconscious was far more at ease as it wandered hazily through a daytime forest, as though remembering the path she had taken just the day before on her Pathfinding duties. So much so that she didn’t really believe that she was dreaming at all.

Until something bright caught her eye against the darkness of the tree trunks. Bright, and red. Bertha had seen the claw marks of bears on trees before, or gouges from the horns of stags. It looked a bit like that, but instead of pale bark it looked almost as though… the tree was bleeding. She peered at the sight curiously, until her peripherals found another such mark on a tree further ahead. What was doing this to the trees?

She followed the second claw mark, only to see a third up ahead. And a fourth. Her heart sank, fear beginning to well, as she realized that she seemed to be following a trail of some kind. A terrible trail, of the thing that was making trees bleed in a way Bertha didn’t think was possible. She picked up the pace as a frightening scent filled her nose. Blood. So the trees really WERE bleeding?? Fearful but determined to get to the bottom of whatever was rampaging through the forest Bertha raced along the trail of claw marks, afraid of what she would see, but ready to face it nonetheless.
