That is the essential problem of Islam; it is not progressive enough.  No faith can survive if it doesn't grow; rigid and repressive dogmas always eat themselves up in the end.

Some more (and less) than others!   But isn't it true that the core message of Christianity is forgiveness and redemption?  What is the core message of Islam? That the sole purpose of existence is to worship God. I do not believe that God wants slavish worshipers, otherwise free will would not exist.

It's easier to set up a system of strict rules / laws than allow people to act according to conscience - and maybe such freedom, and its inherent responsibilities, scares most people. Just tell me what I can and can't do.

That's true; some people respond better to a structured lifestyle--"In obedience I am free"--while others instinctively rebel against a regimented society.  It's a great anomaly that human nature embraces diametric opposites.

My own motto is "I am as God made me!"
