Thanks. The tanin from grevillea trees causes this colouration in the water I believe.

Ha I saw this and automatically knew it would have to be either straddie moreton or byron can't really get paper bark trees staining the water anywhere else..at least not as far as I know.

Like a coca cola iceblock! Yes it's tanin out of melaleuca swamp trees.

Indeed. . . Except it was such a minor thing I almost didn't notice it.

You almost didn't notice it? Is it so insignificant?... however, I'm glad you saw it! And about that colouration in the water I totally agree with you, I saw the same kind if water when I went last year to the National Park of the Everglades, Florida... which is practically 100% swamps.

I was just walking on the beach past the lagoon, and there was plenty of dirty water and seagulls. The light reflecting on this section of water must have caught my eye somehow. I could so easily not have seen it.

For sure.. . But it was only a small patch where the light caught it. Most of the water was dirty brown.

By any chance... is there mangrove in that place?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
wildplaces In reply to jcmaesch [2007-01-30 06:36:37 +0000 UTC]
There would be. Our coastline has lots of mangrove. . . This colouration comes from melaleuca trees I believe - another one of our common swamp trees.

Ok. I saw a lot of mangrove in Florida, and that dirty water is usually found where the mangrove is... that's why I asked. And I'm not very familiarized with the melaleuca trees, I'll have to look for it and learn a little bit more of them...

Mangroves and mud go together. It's great mud. It's the spawning ground for so many species of fish and invertebrates. . . Melaleuca stains the water - gives it a clour like coca cola, but light plays on it in interesting ways, like here.

That mud you're talking about is really rich, you're right. And you can know it because you always see a lot of kind species going around near mangrove... adn light was really awesome on that coca-cola, haha.
