Gods often move in mysterious ways, backwards, forwards, side to side, up and down and out and around. Churches are kinda like a god's house, and each house must be exactly the same shape and size to fit a god's entire body. Things are complicated by the fact that most gods change shape and size quite frequently, from a circular-domed box shape one day, to a kind of inverse tetrahedron shape the next, and if a god tries to go in one of their houses and the building is the the wrong shape and size then they get really angry and drown everyone in a 12-mile radius. As a result, people who do not want to be drowned and wish to continue doing things must constantly keep up to date on every god's current shape and size via it's Twitter feed, and switch around nearby churches for others that are the correct size and shape.

But a god, by definition, has to be too big to fit in any box we can make. Humans like to manage their gods so try to squeeze them into boxes and each attempt results in a different and equally inadequate religion.
