He strode into the plush, plastic palm tree'd Kensington Palace Mall, like a gladiator entering the arena.
Had to be 6'7" in his sandals and broader than the visible horizon. Rippled muscles the colour of polished walnut, with symmetry defined by the sheen of perspiration. An animated bronze statue, absconding from some Grecian Arcadia, quickened and brought to life by a burning message from the times of antiquity.
Dreadlocks flowing and keen eyes blazing fiercely, gazing off somewhere, even to the elipse, the hazy blurry edges of the world. He wore a simple tunic of a rough fabric, may have even been sacking. From the hem of the garment came the merry tinkle of maybe a hundred or so, tiny silver bells.
Beneath his massive arm he carried a large African tom-tom drum which was decorated with feathers and shells and mysterious symbols.
Burdened shoppers, laden with their recently purchased, temporal treasures, parted before him like the Red sea. Their mouths open and gawping like displaced fish, struggling for air and reasons.
Like Samson of old, he placed himself between the two main guilded pillars of the Mall and crouching down, began a slow, rhythmic beat which seemed atune with the beating of a heart. boom-a bom, booma- bom, booma-bom. Almost imperceptably, the cardial beat quickened, as did the hearts of the shoppers who congregated around him. They were suddenly and all too easily now in tune with the deep bass throbbing of the drum. The drum called out to them, drew them, led them and summoned them like a great, primordial , wordless voice.
From my panoramic view from the upper gallery I could see that the whole of the lower hall had turned to face the commands of the booming drum. Now he had risen to his full height, still commanding the beat of their hearts upon the goat skin drum. He threw back his head of flailing dreads and his deep baritone voice resonated across the Mall and up high to the upper galleries, reverberating around the glass dome in a rich Caribbean accent.

"Ya architecs a deceit,
ya resurrecters a Baba-laan.
Ah staand in ya Tem-paal
pro-clay-min ya dahn faall,
I an' I see ya rise
I an' I 'ear ya lies.
Ya darkness com, a tyma dread!
Ya wark like dem da livin' dead.
Y'av ears but 'ear nuttin,
Y'ava mout dat say nuttin
Yav eyes lika blind maan
Yava heart dat feel nuttin
Yava mynd dat laaf at Gaad wizdum.
'Ear me now Great Baba-laan
where me now da riteous gaan?
Ya dress up in ya pryde an' fashun
an' cast asiyde Gaad sweet com-pashun
Y'bominayshun piled on I
wit sign an' wunda fraam da sky
an' wit da snayke ya mayke alliyance
Jah shake 'im 'ead at ya defiyance.
Ya not 'ear da Isreeliyte
'ung up ahn crass maan giv ya liyte
sa now ya eye wi' daarkness blynd
ya way ya nevva ganna fynd!
Ya trezhaa ahl will pass away
like athiest on judgement day.
'ear me now Great Baba-laan
Jah say ya kingdaam soon be gaan!"

The shoppers just swayed and danced to the rhythm of the beat, smiling in their dazzling paradise of ignorance. Some were even clapping and threw money on the floor. They imagined that they had been entertained with an improptu rapp. I suspected most never understood a single word because of his rich accent. I also suspected that had they comprehended every word and every syllable, they still would never understand him.
But the spirits who controlled their human puppets understood every word..........and trembled!
