In Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, Lavinia is raped and mutilated by her father's enemies in order to hurt him. Set in Roman times, the people of Shakespeare's day might have hoped to have left such barbarism behind. But had not. Similarly, just last year, people we consider to be on our side in a war murdered a young woman, Darja Dugina, in order to hurt her father who was close to their enemy. People we might have thought good mocked her death and ridiculed his grief.
