Description This was a joint photo taken with my brother Matthew
This photograph of a spectacled caiman was taken at night in the Pantanal, Brazil. The caiman was in a small stream waiting for fish to pass through its open jaws. We exposed the foreground with an off-camera flash and then left the shutter open to capture the star trails.

This is an amazing example of an out of the box nature wildlife image. I can't recall ever seeing star trails used in a wildlife photograph before. The off camera flash provided the perfect foreground lighting for the caiman and its habitat, and your creative long exposure showcases beautiful star trails and even a portion of the blurred Milky Way. The composition is solid with my eye flowing with the stream from the caiman's eye to its body and back into the distance where the stars take over. It's a joy to see such creativity in wildlife photography. Congratulations on a unique and effective photograph.

This is a great shot, although I have to admit that I like the other pose on your blog a bit better. I think it's really cool that you tell how you achieved your shot. I found your blog to be extremely helpful, especially the part about your focusing technique! I definitely would like to try something like this, although I doubt it will be with a cayman since we don't have any of those around where I live.

Amazing idea to start with! Phenomenal combination in a photo. Thanks for the details of how you did this, not to mention the bravery involved! I would not have been this brave...

This is an amazing capture in every respect. As a complete reptile geek, it's really nice to see a crocodilian photographed at night that's not their eyeshine. *juddpatterson really did it justice in his critique, but I think the coolest part is what looks like a little fish right by the caiman's mouth. Not the dinner he was hoping for, I'm sure, but perhaps an acceptable appetizer. lol
