I love this image! You are very confident with your pony lines.
Can I make one suggestion to your tutorial...or at least something you might try using with your next image...
Use the magic wand tool to extract your lineart is great, but not really the best way in Photoshop to do it. I would recommend using Ctrl+Alt+~
It is designed to remove all white from your black lineart layer. [link] <-- Will show you how to use the command correctly.
It's been a real time saver for me.

What kind of paper do you use do draw? Any particular make or manufacturer?
I've been working with pen and ink off and on for many years and haven't been able to find paper that can take ink without bleeding.

I've tried Levels a few times, I dunno, it didn't really work for me. At least not as quick-and-dirty as this method does.
And I typically like to make the lineart it's own Layer so it's easier to manipulate, in case a part needs to be skewed or enlarged for the proportions. Plus, as you said, BG insertion.
That's neat. I typically learn or try some new technique with every picture I make, in a big way or just a tiny way. The ATG event overall helped me work on my speed, as well as accurate pony anatomy. Plus it gave me some serious respect for deadlines.

Excellent tutorial... and I appreciate that you did it without talking down to the viewer. (Not all tutorial authors have internalized that little skill yet...)
Plus, Octavia.

Well I tend to mimic the style of my better art professors; informative, but understanding that the student may not be quite ready for this level of instruction. More than anything I tried to make sure I didn't skip over any important steps, so I meticulously went over every stage of the process.
I feel like I accomplished that.

You can use any kind of pens, altho the ones I use have a REALLY nice line quality.
I get them individually for $3.00 or so at art stores.

Well I'll need it for everything, including ponies. And is this the Octavia from Tumblr?

I didn't upload it to Tumblr. Tho maybe someone else did.
I make the Ask Surprise blog, remember?

Octavia is a background pony who plays the cello in the season finale episode. She's only on screen for about 3 seconds and has no lines or any important plot points. People just draw her 'cuz she's pretty.

I've noticed that the pretty ponies are never the important characters.

That's true. But you see her prettiness every episode, so it's not as noticeable sometimes.

I just don't like how my tablet linework looks.
Despite using that method for the Surprise Tumblr...

Honestly I hated doing my line work digitally too until I started using paint tool sai and got accustomed to the stabilizer settings which makes my line work damn near perfect with some hiccups here and there despite the tiny ass bamboo I'm using. For example [link] , did that in a little less then an hour with out too much trouble in sai. Honestly zach if you use sai once you'll become a sai junkie like me and the rest of deviant art lately

Magic wand? Hmm... but why don't you use select by Luminosity which works much better and accurate than MW (as far as I can see)?

You probably need to play with Levels a bit as well to remove some leftovers from dirt sketch. In this case the feature will work better.

Oh, dirt's not really a problem, I always do a little touch-up cleaning of things like that when I have the linework isolated anyway.
