Description Archaeotherium ('Ancient Beast') was an entelodont, a group that has been called 'hell pigs' or 'terminator pigs'.  Nevertheless, they were not true pigs, but more closely related to hippos and whales.  They were characterized by huge skulls, short, deep, thick bodies, supported on surprisingly slender limbs.  Archaeotherium was from the size of a pig to that of a cow.  They had fearsome teeth, and most had wide-flaring cheekbones (jugals) and strange paired wart-like bony projections on their lower jaws.  They had only two toes per foot, ending in hooves.  They were likely omnivorous, and Archaeotherium is believed to have hunted several ungulate species, including small rhinos and camels.  The camel Poebrotherium seems to have been a favourite; caches of bones belonging to it were found which might have been carcasses stored by Archaeotherium to eat later.  This species lived from about 38 to 25 million years ago, in North America.

Ah, yes, the entelodonts. I remember them so well from Walking with Beasts.

I didn't much like how they reconstructed them there, but at least they made folks aware of them.  Thanks for commenting!

It turns out those jugals might have had a lot of flesh covering them.

Well I reckon they anchored jaw muscles but also I think they were for display and might even have had 'warty' tissue to extend their protrusion, somewhat like warthogs, which is what I was going for here.

Okay.

But since it's more closely related to hippos, it makes more sense to have them filled in. You know?
