Description Here's the proper shaggy version!  I first thought Diprotodon, being as big as it was, would be hairless or nearly so like a rhino - since it also lived in a tropical and subtropical climate - but actually, they found traces of its hair along with its footprints, so it must have been pretty shaggy like modern wombats!  So here it is!  Diprotodon as I said previously was the largest known marsupial, up to (or over) 3 m in length and 1.8 m at the shoulder, with a huge skull.  It had two prominent, long front teeth in each jaw, and I think the upper teeth might very well have protruded like this.  I am not sure if it was a good digger like modern wombats ... it didn't have such proportionally long claws on its feet.  I would love it if we could learn more of this fascinating species ... we only just missed it, it went extinct within the last few thousand years or so.  There's rock art that possibly depicts it, and some folks say it might have inspired legends of the Australian Bunyip.

Are we really sure about those footprints with fur impressions? The only source I was able to find was this web.archive.org/web/2012020823… ...not that reliable if you ask to me. If we add that it would be strange for a rhino sized animal living in such a hot climate to be as thickly furred as the small modern wombats, I fear that we are perpetuating a weakly supported stereotype just because of how much it has been represented in books, documentaries and other media, much like we have done with the American mastodon markwitton-com.blogspot.com/20… .
But I may be totally wrong, what do you think?

But orangutans don't even reach a ton, and Africa too is not always hot with its freezing nights, and yet there are elephants and rhinos...

Can anyone explain why it didn't lose its fur? That sounds like a contradiction of what we know about other large mammals.

I can't explain, sorry!  But the southern parts of Australia can experience a bit of cold from time to time ...

Looks kinda like a giant wombat? Great representation though, think I saw one of these on the History channel. Come to think of it, where else would you see one?!

I always wonder how they raised their babies marsupial way being that large.
