Description Tragoportax was one of the earliest of the large antelopes.  It lived from 11 to 7 million (or maybe as little as 2.5 million) years ago; fossils of the genus have been found in Africa, Europe and Asia.  It was a Boselaphine, a group that today only includes two species, the Nilgai and the Chousingha or four-horned antelope.  Tragoportax had bigger horns than those two.  I'm basing my reconstruction on some nice horns found of the species cyrenaicus which inhabited North Africa.  It could reach a bodyweight of 200 kg.  Females had smaller horns than the males.  There are signs they lived in herds and could graze as well as browse.  I reconstruct it here with manes and fur fringes to make the male look more imposing - these features are widespread in the bovid famiy.
