Tell me, does this image look bright enough? I'm replying on my laptop (which is set pretty bright) and it looks like a cloudy day. I think I need to add some warm tone to the light and kick up the brightness of it just a touch.

This image on my super-bright MacBookAir, which I've turned down to almost half brightness, is the most "normal" looking image of yours I've seen in a long time. It does look like an overcast, cloudy, day. Your sweetie looks almost normally lit to me. I say almost because her highlights would look overblown if the rest of her skin tones were to brighten up a bit to look normal. You would have to tone down the highlights before bringing up the rest of her skin tones.

I think I know what the main problem is. A typical light setup for me is UberEnvironment2 with OmniFreaker's AreaLight plane to add a little punch and gain definition to shadows. It appears that my best-lit scenes are indoors, usually a studio-type setting, and that is because of the raytrace distance I have to use. If the standard setting is used indoors, the interior will not be lit. As a force of habit, for an outdoor scene, I've either left that setting at default or even increased the distance. I should try an outdoor scene with the setting I usually use for an indoor scene, which is somewhere between 30 and 75 (default is 500). Then I can turn the intensity down gradually. I bet the maximum trace distance setting is what is causing the problem.

Here we are talking about cloudy days, and you mentioned the skin highlights and something "clicked" in my head I gotta get the flippin' light closer to the subject! Big fat duh, Bill

If your lights are too far away, that will cause the darkness in the scenes. Lights here behave like lights in the real world, more or less.

Your latest scene with Brandi is well lit, if a bit too bright for the dark background!
