People hate Comic Sans because it gets used even when a casual font is not appropriate.
I mean, if you had to pick a lawyer to avoid gaol, you would probablypick the lawyer notΒ using Comic Sans on his business card.

And then when Undertale came out, Comic Sans, along with Papyrus, was forgiven in the internet's eyes.Β

As some people say, it has a default uneven kerning, and it's hard to look at due to the uneven spacing. It also doesn't blend with comic books. All because it has 'Comic' in the name, it doesn't mean you should use it for such.

Yeah, I really never understood it either. In fact, when I started seeing people talking smack about it, I was surprised. It's just a font, guys! What's the big deal, really?

Yes, we all know it's overused and wrongly used, and that's kind of a bandwagon answer here. More in-depth and much more importantly, here's what's wrong:Β the point of a font is to effectively communicate, and it does a crap job of that.Β It's an aesthetically poor font and a slew of typography problems. The contours are messy, the kerning is screwed up, and it's poorly designed. Readability becomes a problem because of this; that's why it's a shame when people use it for comics or other things that depend heavily on text. Someone can like how it looks, but that doesn't make it any easier to read.Β

Kristen ITC is worse....but I still don't really like Comic Sans. There is a time and place for Comic Sans, and a freaking FIREARMS TUTORIAL is not one of them. xD

I am totaly down with that. Comic sans and Kristen ITC do not belong in serious settings.

It's because you can't take it seriously.
Look at an official document used with Comic Sans, and tell me if you take it seriously. Designers also hate it due to its childish design.
It's overall ugly and is by far the most hated typeface on the internet.

I have no fucking clue. I really don't. I mean. I kinda know what's wrong with it. It's not too professional, it's used all the time and personally, I just think it looks too bulgy....but the reason people flip out about it is beyond me.
The internet has a habit of making people annoyed but the stupidest things but this is just nuts. XD

I think it's gotten out of hand, a few people dislike it for it's popularity and tendency to be over used, and other people grabbed on

Dekler [2012-03-10 12:43:02 +0000 UTC]
Comic Sans is hated for a couple of reasons:
- The HORRIBLE abuse of the font for just about anything. I was at the hairdressers and there was a brochure about people doing a big sponsored tour on bicycle of which the proceedings would go to fund research against cancer. The brochure was in Comic Sans, which I found hugely disrespectful. There are MILLIONS of examples like this, but I went for a personal one here.
- It's the go-to font, which we consider very lazy design. Using Comic Sans in a comic is kind of like using Times New Roman for the entire lay-out of a magazine. The font has become so recognisable that we instantly recognize it as the font that members of the PTA on an elementary school would use for events. It feels cheap and unprofessional because ANYONE can and WILL use the font.
- It's got some design issues. It's way too wobbly and it doesn't look like the fonts used in professional comics, thereby making it wrong to use it for the very thing it was designed to do.
Don't get me wrong, there's a time and place for Comic Sans, but unless that time and place is "Kidz Korner", I suggest not using it.

Thank you for your brief essay as to the failings of the Font Comic Sans
Your number one and number two reasons appear to be the same basic 'it's over used' only one being an example, and one being why it's overused.
I had not heard your third reason, and that's interesting, I hadn't noticed. But you are right, professional comics lettering doesn't look like Comic Sans.
Your overall conclusion, while in support of your arguments is overly judgmental. There are other fonts I think would be more appropriate for 'Kidz Korner' anyway.

Dekler In reply to Willowanderer [2012-03-10 17:54:43 +0000 UTC]
Actually my second and first argument aren't quite the same, I'll try and point out the difference:
The first argument is about how it's used inappropriately, for "do not enter" signs and other supposedly serious messages. That's the most used argument.
The second argument is that it's so recognisable that it instantly cheapens the work at hand. Kind of like how a Photoshop professional instantly recognizes a shoddily smacked on filter or an abuse of bevel&emboss.
Another example would be wordart, the function in MS Word that makes words 3D and gradiented and whatnot. If you use one of the standard presets, people will recognize that and see it as lazy design.
The first argument is about it being an inappropriate font for serious occasions, the other argument is that, no matter what the occasion, Comic Sans makes your work look unprofessional. Two similar sounding but very different arguments.
Combined the two arguments would mean that Comic Sans makes the company look like a lemonade stand and the designer like a kid running a lemonade stand.
