Description My Little Chocolate Drop!! LOL! I was missing infants from my portfolio and this seemed like a good idea to me!

My exercises with doing these spots is working! It's helping me speed up my PSD painting speed. Which is great!! When it comes to freelance a limitation I had to recognize was that sometimes painting in Photoshop was just taking me way, way, way too long! I figured painting a bunch of individual items would help me lock down a process and help me speed things up. Which is much better than me guessing my way through every item I render. So far the only consistent thing I've done in every PSD image is the brush that I use. But right now I'm much, much more comfortable with what I consider to be my technique. So, that's a good thing!!

I hope you enjoy the image! I had a lot of fun doing these. The image I originally scanned in was of a white child and his facial structure was different. I like the evolution of him. After a certain point he felt like he had a personality so I gave him a name, Geoffrey!! (Don't call me strange!!) Meh I guess you can if you like! So don't be surprised if he shows up later in other illustrations. I need subjects to show in multiple images to show consistency and Geoffrey has made the short list.

Enjoy!!!

*****REVISED*****
I took the advice of my fellow Deviant and some of my co-workers and friends and reworked little Geoffrey some! Let meknow what ya think!!

Heya Stephen!! Thanks so much for the critique!! My heart goes pitter pat anytime I click the critique button when submitting a piece! But I long to get insightful opinions on my work. I always want to improve and get better!! So thank you so much!!

First of all, AWESOME!!! I'm so glad that you feel these images could work in all those industries!! I think I'm tearing up a little bit! LOL! That means so much to me, you just don't know! Thanks!

You are dead on when you say that the color pallete is designated for this demographic. Most baby stuff is very, very pastellish and super soft. I may have over done that a bit. I'll play with adjusting the contrast levels and see if I can nudge things a bit.

When you talk about Geoffrey's feet are you talking about the one closest to us or the one in the back? (Sorry, I always get confused as to whether people are talking about my left and right or the characters left and right.) I appreciate any clarification you can give! I assume you're talking about the one closest to us. But I'll wait before I dig a hole for myself!! Because I do see a problem with that one! LOL! Thanks again for the crit brother!!

I'm glad you accepted the critique... and yes it is a humbling experience (assuming someone is not out to rip your head off with their criticism). And yes, I was speaking of the foot closest to us... it just seems a bit off, nothing major, but a little tweaking could really push this piece!

I try to be as honest with myself as possible in regards to my artwork. I embrace knowing what my weaknesses are so that I can try to improve them. I've definitely dealt with some folks who don't have great input or crit. And I'm sure to them they are 100 percent correct. But a lot of art is subjective, what I LOVE you could very well HATE and neither of us would be wrong. But when it comes down to basic structure and composition, there's a bridge there that gives common space to us as artists. So I appreciate your input!! Thanks again for the crit!

Ooh and also, I think the problem with the foot isn't what you think. I think it just doesn't look like it's connected properly to where his ankle and calf would be. It just doesn't fit quite right. So you are right that something is off and I will have to adjust that!! Thank you for calling my attention to it!!

I'm probably just gonna take the gums out. It seems to scare more than a few people. Or at the very least scale them back a lot!! LOL! Great minds think alike! I tried one tooth and it made him look like a creepy old man for some reason. LOL! So he'll probly stay toothless. Maybe I can add some drool down his chin! LOL!

JMarcDodsonJr In reply to WilsonWJr [2009-05-07 13:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Haha, talk about irony, give the baby a tooth and he looks elderly. Most elderly wish they had real teeth.

On another note, I don't mind the gums at all. I'm not sure they added anything to him, but they certainly didn't scare me. I think he's cute the way he is. Leave him alone and enjoy a really nice illustration, you're creation (does that make you Geoffrey's god since you're his creator?) has the personality you want him to have as he is now.

Drool might be hard to convey a certain emotion in a still image. It could make him look handicap, tired, drugged, or all kinds of emotions. I like Geoffrey as he is and look forward to seeing him in more of your work. Yeah, leave Geoffrey alone and go make another image that I can enjoy

Very cute, I love the look on his face. It's kinda like that really relieved look babies make just after they've just passed gas. Also, the shadow and shading on the objects are excellent. They look very three dimensional. The only thing I might change is the color of the liquid in his bottle. In my opinion it kind of clashes with the color of his outfit. Maybe milk instead of water?

OMG! That looks like water to you!! Gee whiz..big fail on my part...it is milk. LOL!

JMarcDodsonJr In reply to WilsonWJr [2009-05-07 14:11:11 +0000 UTC]

lol, it still looks like water to me, but maybe I'm just drawing from my life experiences. I dated a woman with an infant for a while during my undergrad years and I gave the kid water in her bottle more than milk. The milk gave her terrible gas, so unless it was meal time she got water because I didn't want to smell it.

LOL! I thought baby farts didn't smell....shows how much I know!! maybe I should just make it Kool-Aid. Red flavor!

JMarcDodsonJr In reply to WilsonWJr [2009-05-07 19:08:08 +0000 UTC]

lol, the baby is drinking from the kool-aid.

Yeah, baby farts smell, but it's kinda funny. After they fart they get a big smile on their face and sometimes just start laughing out of nowhere. When that happened I always cracked up.

Aaahh!! It's good to know that I maintain some of my childlike innocence. When I fart I can't help but laugh outloud too sometimes. My farts are funny. Especially the look my dog gives me when I do. (I can't believe I just typed this and am about to hit send!) LOL!

JMarcDodsonJr In reply to WilsonWJr [2009-05-10 00:33:23 +0000 UTC]

HAHAHA, what does the dog's face look like. You have to describe it now that you typed that.

I think a good illustrator has to maintain childhood innocence. Also, some immaturity (my wife hates that aspect) to work on children related material, or even humorous illustrations in general. Just my opinion though

petitenajla [2009-04-25 19:03:14 +0000 UTC]

ey how would you define a spot illustration? I'm being held by ignorance here...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WilsonWJr In reply to petitenajla [2009-04-26 16:25:45 +0000 UTC]

Have you ever read a Harry Potter book? Spot illustrations are those small b/w illustrations that would appear at the beginning of each chapter. Something less than a quarter page that can sometimes depict an event, character or object with the text it is being derived from. They can be black and white or in full color. But they generally only depict the main objects involved and don't focus on illustrating backgroud elements or surrounding items and characters.

The infant spot sheet is primarily showing an infant and a number of his articles, toys, etc. The background wallpaper is probably making it feel too much like one whole image. Is that what's confusing?

(You never know, some people really like ugly babies, the same way some people say that certain dogs are SOO Ugly that they are cute! LOL! I didn't want that!) Thank you for easing my fears!!
