In reality, Dagon was probably just a proto-chtulhu, since the story "Dagon" was basically a less-polished version of "Call of Cthulhu" and based on a dream Lovecraft had. But since Lovecraft continued to reference Dagon after he had written COC, I like to think of him as a surviving Star Spawn that the Deep Ones worshiped.

Yeah, true, but he isn't a proto-cthulhu. Dagon is a Babylonian fertility god and god of the fish and fishing trade. He didn't make up Dagon

I'm aware of where the name Dagon came from. But the story Dagon was definitely an earlier draft of Call of Cthulhu
