Description This feather is a gift for Jeanne, another volunteer at the Horizon Wings Raptor Rehabilitation and Education Center . As soon as I met Jeanne, I knew I'd met an awesome person. She taught me the ropes at the center, helping me learn and showing patience when I made mistakes. I know I have a lot more to learn, and with Jeanne I'm confident that I have a good teacher.

Thanks for everything you've done, for everything you've taught me, and for letting me borrow peanuts to win Julian's approval!

About the merlin on this feather - I didn't know too much about Maeve, and sadly she passed before I was at Horizon Wings. From what Jeanne has told me, Maeve was a non-releasable merlin who had the sweetest personality and was on her way to becoming a great program bird. I hope this feather does her memory justice.

This is really quite fantastic. I appreciate the little description/story that you shared with it.

you are able to put so much detail into these feathers! It makes me want to try but i think i would just ruin the feather. my painting abilities aren't all that great if its not water colors, even then its more simple stuff.

Hm, I wonder - how to do these feather painting things. I'm going to have to look into it, it looks very fun, if challenging.

It's not too difficult - the hardest part is getting that first layer down and painting in thin layers. Once the first layer is on, it 'glues' the feather vane together so it doesn't come apart.

Loving all the feather paintings.
Can I ask where you get your turkey feathers from? I would love to try painting on feathers some day.

I get my turkey feathers from a friend who gets them from someone who hunts them for food. I feel better using feathers that were from a food bird, as it means more of the bird is utilized rather than wasted.

I agree with you completely about the waste. It's good to know that your art is as ethical as it is beautiful

I love the feather details on this picture. And as always, I am in awe of the paintings that you do on feathers. The background is also really well executed here.
