Description A portrait of my classmate, Chuck, for an illustration project. The title of the project was "My Friend is..." and we were instructed to use the "C.F. Payne technique," which involves taking a photo of the person for reference and creating from it a pencil drawing, with an acrylic wash, then watercolor wash, then neutral oil wash, with colored pencils and acrylic for touch ups. In the watercolor and oil phases, pigment is taken away to show the layer underneath. The result is a portrait with a lot of depth.

So, needless to say, it's a heavily mixed media piece.

The assignment also called for portraying the classmate in some way that had to do with their interests or history. Chuck has Egyptian heritage dating back to the pharaohs, and he loves football. He requested the two be put together in his portrait, and I think it turned out well.

Acrylic, watercolor, oils, and colored pencil on illustration board, 10.5 X 13.75 inches

CF payne teaches at my college. I'm hoping to take his class, but that technique does sound overwhelming.
Love his expression!

He gave a demonstration at the Atlanta College of Art a few years back (this school merged with SCAD-Atlanta which is where I go now). My illustration professor showed us a video of his demo - it was pretty neat.

I love the way you combined all the elements. The technique sounds like a heck of lot of work, but the results are great.

The technique doesn't take that long, it's just getting everything precise. I'd say the longest part is waiting for the oil layer to dry. And thanks!

Mixing those two things is a very good idea! And the outcome looks great.
I like how you've used different medias, looks very good. I really like the colours and that hat-thing he's wearing. (doesn't-even-know-what-it's-called-in-finnish)

This combination of techniques sounds crazy. I've only ever tried putting a watercolour wash on top of an acrylic wash once and felt incredibly bold when I did it. So I'm totally in awe of your mixed media skills.
But the picture is also amazing in many other ways. I love how you captured his expression and pulled off the combination of ancient egypt and football. The golden football - a must have status symbol for every modern pharaoh.
Oh, and of course I'm in love with the colour scheme. Definitely a

I normally work in watercolor, so combining it with different media definitely made me a bit nervous.

Thanks!

Yeah, instinct said, "there's no WAY mixing acrylic, watercolor, oils, and colored pencils is ever going to work!" But it does! I made a few mistakes along the way (a patchy first acrylic wash, for one), but I think next time I do it, I'll be able to do it better.
